Real Madrid Endures To Claim Sixth Super Cup Title, Ancelotti Reveals

Carlo Ancelotti acknowledged that his Real Madrid players faced challenges during their record sixth UEFA Super Cup victory over Atalanta on Wednesday. Despite a tough start, Madrid managed just three shots in the first half, with an expected goals (xG) total of 0.38. Rodrygo's best attempt hit the crossbar, but a stronger second-half performance saw Federico Valverde and Kylian Mbappe score to secure the win.

Ancelotti, who equalled Miguel Munoz as the Madrid coach with the most titles (14), expressed his delight with the result while acknowledging the match's difficulty. "It is an honour and a privilege to live these nights here," Ancelotti said. "We were suffering, fighting and winning too. We suffered a bit in the first half because Atalanta pressed a lot and played very well defensively."

Real Madrid's Gritty Super Cup Win

In the first 45 minutes, Atalanta's pressing game caused problems for Madrid, who struggled to create chances. However, the game opened up in the second half as Atalanta tired, providing more space for Rodrygo, Vinicius, and Mbappe to exploit. Ancelotti noted that these players are particularly dangerous when given room to manoeuvre.

Ancelotti's triumph in Warsaw marked his fifth Super Cup win, surpassing Pep Guardiola's four titles. Much attention was on Mbappe's debut, as he became the first Madrid player to score on his competitive debut since Jude Bellingham did so against Athletic Bilbao a year ago. Mbappe had an impressive final season with Paris Saint-Germain, contributing 44 goals and 10 assists.

The Frenchman has set his sights on scoring 50 goals in his debut season with Madrid. Ancelotti believes Mbappe can achieve this target: "He has the quality to score a lot of goals, more than 50," Ancelotti said after full-time. "We have to look for the balance of the team and today we had it, although in the first half the game was difficult."

Looking Ahead

Madrid now shifts focus to their opening match of the 2024-25 La Liga campaign. Ancelotti and his squad will travel to Son Moix on Sunday to face Mallorca. The team aims to build on their Super Cup success as they embark on their domestic league journey.

Ancelotti praised his team's defensive performance despite early struggles: "The team played a great game defensively." This solid foundation will be crucial as they prepare for upcoming challenges in La Liga.
