Rangers Title Race Heats Up As They Beat Kilmarnock At Ibrox

Rangers climbed to second place in the Scottish Premiership with a 5-1 home win over 10-man Kilmarnock at Ibrox Stadium, trimming Hearts' lead at the top to three points in a one-sided contest.

The result also moved Rangers three points ahead of Celtic, who still have one game in hand after Celtic's trip to Aberdeen was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch, while Hearts had slipped up with a 1-0 defeat against St. Mirren on Tuesday.

Rangers narrow gap in title race

The match turned almost immediately when Dom Thompson received a red card in the fourth minute, pulling down Djeidi Gassama inside the penalty area, which left Kilmarnock with 10 players and handed Rangers a crucial early advantage at Ibrox.

James Tavernier converted the resulting penalty with composure to give Rangers the lead, yet despite the numerical superiority and strong territory, Rangers did not add a second goal before half-time and had to remain patient against Kilmarnock's deep defensive shape.

Rangers finally stretched their advantage in the 58th minute when Bojan Miovski curled in a precise finish, before Andreas Skov Olsen came off the bench and marked the appearance with a first goal for the club to tighten control of the scoreline.

Kilmarnock briefly threatened a late response when Greg Kiltie tapped in to cut the deficit, but Rangers substitutes continued to influence the game as Oliver Antman struck for 4-1 and Mikey Moore added a stoppage-time fifth to complete the emphatic home success.

The performance underlined Rangers' strength at Ibrox in the Scottish Premiership and further damaged Kilmarnock's record at the stadium, extending a dominant recent sequence in this league fixture and adding further pressure on Neil McCann's attempts to improve away form.

Key Scottish Premiership numbers from Ibrox underline the shift in momentum:

Statistic Figure
Rangers' current home league winning run 6 matches
Previous 13 home league games at Ibrox 4 wins, 5 draws, 4 defeats
Rangers' last 16 league meetings with Kilmarnock 14 wins
Neil McCann's league trips to Ibrox 4 defeats, aggregate score 17-2

Rangers leave this fixture with the title race alive, having punished Kilmarnock's early dismissal, strengthened home league form at Ibrox, and maintained a strong record in this Scottish Premiership matchup while staying within three points of leaders Hearts.
