Meghalaya stuns football giant Bengal

Guwahati, Feb 11 (UNI) Minnows Meghalaya today stunned runners up West Bengal at their own game, sending alarm bells ringing with a 4-1 drubbing in the men's section of the 33rd National Games here.

Paying scant reputation to the Bengal team, Meghalaya played with clinical precision giving no chance to their rival. Playing with short passes, the strongly built Meghalaya team, made the Bengal players look like a school team as they dominated the proceedings right from the beginning.

Although both the teams were tied at 1-1 till the 62nd minute, Meghalaya went on a goal-scoring spree in the last ten minutes of the game pumping in as many as three goals to leave the Bengal players shell-shocked.

Meghalaya displayed more tactical finesse in catching their fancied opponents off guard by going all out when Bengal looked to counter-attack but it was Meghalaya who did all the scoring with Niwean O Dgatphos, who had also scored the first goal in the 38th minute, finding the net for the second time in the 84th minute.

K Lyingsing made it 3-1 and Romeo joined the party, making it 4-1 in the 89th minute, leaving Meghalaya players delirious.

The soccer crazy north-eastern state team looked determined to not allow all the football medals to travel outside the region.
