Mauricio Pochettino Begins Tenure As US Coach With 2-0 Victory Against Panama
Mauricio Pochettino's tenure as the United States manager began positively with a 2-0 victory over Panama. This friendly match in Austin marked a rematch after USA's earlier Copa America loss to Panama, which contributed to their group-stage exit and Gregg Berhalter's departure. Pochettino's appointment followed this change. The first goal came in the 49th minute when Yunus Musah scored from Christian Pulisic's assist.
Pochettino is known for his attacking style, and this was evident as seven USA players were involved in attempts or creating chances during the first half. USA managed 1.7 expected goals (xG) from 11 shots, while Panama had more attempts but only achieved 0.89 xG, indicating limited clear opportunities against Pochettino's team.

Matt Turner made crucial saves to maintain USA's lead, while Puma Rodriguez and Jose Fajardo missed significant chances for Panama. In stoppage time, substitute Pepi secured the win with a goal following Haji Wright's excellent pass.
Musah became only the second player in USA history to play over 3,000 minutes before turning 22. Pepi continued his impactful performances off the bench, equalling Christian Pulisic with six goals as a substitute in international play, just behind Eddie Johnson who has seven.
Austin has become a stronghold for USA soccer, being one of three cities where they have achieved five consecutive shutout victories. This achievement highlights their defensive strength under Pochettino’s guidance.
Looking ahead, USA will face Mexico next. This match presents a different challenge for Pochettino and his squad as they prepare for another test of their abilities on the field.
