Major football tourney to begin in Kannur from March

Kannur, Jan 16 (UNI) An organising committee with CPI(M) Kerala secretary Pinarayi Vijayan as chairman has been constituted for conducting a major football tournament in March in memory of late Chief Minister E K Nayanar.

Winners of the tournament will get the Nayanar Gold Cup weighing 150 sovereigns, Committee working chairman and CPI(M) Central Committee member E P Jayarajan told newsmpersons here yesterday.

He said the committee would try to get leading teams from India and also teams from China and Qatar to take part in the tournament.

The Kerala Football Association has granted registration to the Red Star Arts and Sports Club for conducting the tournament in which 18 teams would participate, he informed.

Mr Jayarajan said the Kerala Sport Council had assured all possible assistance for conducting the tournament.
