Luis Diaz Joins Bayern Munich And Proves Right Choice For Career And Club Ambitions
Luis Diaz says leaving Liverpool for Bayern Munich already feels justified, as strong form and a Champions League win over Real Madrid underline the decision. Diaz scored in Bayern’s 2-1 quarter-final first-leg victory at the Santiago Bernabeu, where Bayern attempted 20 shots and took control for long spells against the Spanish giants.
The Colombia international also continues an elite scoring season. Across all competitions, excluding the Club World Cup, Diaz has produced 38 direct goal contributions in 40 games for Bayern. That figure includes 23 goals and 15 assists, placing Diaz among the most productive attackers in Europe’s top five leagues.

Only four players in Europe’s top five divisions this season have more combined goals and assists. Harry Kane has 54, Kylian Mbappe 44, Michael Olise 41 and Erling Haaland 40. Diaz sits just behind them on 38, underlining Bayern’s attacking strength as the club targets a potential treble under head coach Vincent Kompany.
Diaz’s transfer from Liverpool to Bayern last summer cost 65.5m (75m). The move ended a three-and-a-half-year spell on Merseyside. During that time, Diaz lifted the Premier League, FA Cup and EFL Cup. The 29-year-old has quickly become central to Bayern’s forward line, linking with Kane and others across domestic and European competitions.
Diaz outlined why the switch feels right when speaking to ESPN. Diaz said: "Deciding to join Bayern was the right choice. I'm really happy and I enjoy every match. I feel great, I'm in good shape, and that means I'm ready to help the team. We have a clear plan, we're a very close-knit group, and that shows on the pitch."
That team structure has been clear in Europe. In Madrid, Diaz struck alongside Kane, while Manuel Neuer produced a standout goalkeeping display. Neuer became the first goalkeeper, since detailed data collection began, to record nine saves against Real Madrid in a Champions League knockout game at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Despite the away victory, Diaz felt Bayern could have been even more clinical. Diaz said: "We'd already analysed Real Madrid, and the move [regarding the opening goal] went exactly as we'd planned, Diaz said. We felt more comfortable as the game progressed, won the ball back more often and controlled the game better. That's what we like to do. We're very happy, but we're left with a slight feeling of disappointment that we could have scored one or two more goals. We played a great match against a very tough opponent."
Bayern now stand well placed in Europe and in domestic competitions, with Diaz central to those ambitions. The winger’s numbers, combined with Kane’s output and Neuer’s reliability, support Diaz’s belief that the move to Bayern was the correct step for personal progress and for competing for major silverware this season.
