Messi fined for mom birthday jig

Madrid, Jan 25: Lionel Messi, the Argentine footballer has been fined for wishing his mother a happy birthday after scoring a goal.

The Spanish football federation on Jan 25 informed that the star footballer who plays for Barcelona in La Liga lifted his shirt to show off a vest reading the message, "Happy birthday, mami". He did so after he had scored from a penalty in Barcelona's 3-0 win over Racing Santander on Jan 22.

Though he was not booked by the referee, but his actions found a mention in the referee's match report based on which he was punished under the federation's article 91.1 for goal celebrations, which carries a fine between 2000 and 3000 euros.

He has also received a yellow card.
