The second Group D match on Day 3 of the AFC Asian Cup gets underway at Education City in Al Rayyan (Qatar) as Iran begin their campaign against Palestine on Sunday (January 14).
The match is being played after UAE defeated Hong Kong in the same group 3-1 a few moments ago with Sultan Adil starring in the win. Iran now will be looking for all three points if they want to pull away from Palestine and Hong Kong in the group.
Iran's dominance in Asian football peaked in the 1960s and 1970s, when they won three straight championships (1968, 1972, and 1976). Since then, though, they have not advanced to the final. However, they will look to change that in Qatar.
The team, coached by Amir Ghalenoei, is undoubtedly among the favorites in this year's Asian Cup. The three-time winners will begin their campaign fresh off a 12-match winning streak, their most recent setback occurring during the 2022 World Cup. Iran completed their preparations for the Qatar showpiece in style, winning 2-1 against Burkina Faso on January 5 and convincingly winning 5-0 against Indonesia four days later.
Their impressive performances over the years had seen them reach an all-time high ranking of 15th in the world, and while that has slipped to 21st ahead of this tournament, Iran are still the second-highest-ranked side in the Asian Cup behind Japan (17th).
In the meantime, the Asian Cup offers Palestine, given the unrest the nation has seen recently, a chance to provide some much-needed happiness to their local supporters. After losing the previous two Asian Cups, Makram Daboub's team will be playing in its third straight tournament this year and is looking to create history.
In both their previous showings at the 2015 and 2019 tournaments, the Lions of Canaan were unable to secure a single victory in any of their group fixtures and, as a result, have never made it to the knockout stages.
