Inter's Simone Inzaghi Warns Players Not To Rely On Past Successes Ahead Of Derby Clash

Simone Inzaghi has cautioned Inter Milan against relying on their past successes as they gear up for the Derby della Madonnina against AC Milan on Sunday. Despite winning the last six derbies, Inzaghi emphasised that history won't earn them points. Inter have started the season well, securing eight points from four matches and drawing 0-0 with Manchester City in the Champions League.

Inzaghi expressed frustration over Inter's recent Serie A performance, where they managed only a 1-1 draw with Monza despite having 16 attempts and just two shots on target. He stressed the importance of focusing on the present rather than past victories. "We mustn't think about past derbies. They are only cherished memories, and you don't get points for memories," he stated.

Inzaghi Cautions Inter Ahead of Derby Match

The head coach highlighted the unpredictability of derby matches and urged his team to concentrate on every detail to outperform Milan, who have had a shaky start this season. "We are up against a very strong team with good players. Derbies often defy predictions," Inzaghi added.

Inzaghi acknowledged the challenge of balancing domestic league games with international fixtures like the Champions League. He noted that such matches can be mentally and physically draining, affecting player performance in subsequent games. "Champions League matches drain you both mentally and physically," he explained.

The coach also mentioned that smaller clubs have posed significant challenges to larger teams this season, highlighting the need for careful planning and execution in every match. "So far this season, we've seen smaller clubs pose significant challenges to the bigger teams," he remarked.

Player Selection Strategy

Inzaghi is carefully considering his player selection for the derby, aiming to manage fatigue while maintaining a competitive edge. He respects all his players as first choices but admitted having some doubts about finalising the lineup. "All the players are first choices and I respect them all. I have a few doubts and will decide tomorrow," he said.

He emphasised improving their final ball delivery and finishing skills as crucial areas for development ahead of facing Milan's strong squad. Recognising Milan as formidable opponents, Inzaghi stressed navigating uncertain situations with caution.

The derby holds special significance for Inter fans, and Inzaghi hopes it will inspire a standout performance from his team. After their intense match against Manchester City, he believes this fixture could reveal untapped reserves of strength within his squad.
