2007 Champions Iraq are kicking off their AFC Asian Cup campaign on Monday (January 15) as they face Indonesia in Group D at the Ahmed bin Ali Stadium in Al Rayyan.
This is second Group D match as Japan fought off a spirited Vietnam for a 4-2 draw yesterday after the SouthEast Asian nation surprised the four-time champions with a surprise 2-1 lead by the 34th minute.
Iraq have always been a dark horses to the title at the AFC Asian Cup as the Mesopotamian side has always made it to the knockout stages in every participation at the competition since 1976. Apart from winning the 2007 edition, they finished fourth in 2015 Australia while making a round-of-16 exit in 2019.
Indonesia, on the other hand, have qualified for the tournament for the first time since 2007 and have never made it beyond the group stages in all of their last four appearances. Based on the most recent FIFA rating, Indonesia are ranked 146th, which places them second from the bottom among participating teams in the Asian Cup, behind Hong Kong (150).
It will be difficult for Tae-yong to advance them past the group stage for the first time, as they are grouped with Vietnam, Iraq, and the top-ranked Asian country, Japan. Their form coming into this competition could be better, too, with Indonesia winless in five successive matches in all competitions, losing three friendlies this month by a combined score of 11-1.
They are now bottom of their World Cup Qualifiers second round with one point after two matches, and they have not won against an Asian opponent since defeating Brunei twice in 2026 World Cup qualifying.
Despite their recent dismal performance, Indonesia has always started Asian Cup campaigns strongly, winning their opening match in each of their previous two outings (2004 and 2007) and never losing their opening match.
