Fulham Miss Europe As Narrow Margins Cost Premier League Finish
Fulham closed the Premier League campaign with a controlled 2-0 victory over Newcastle United, yet the mood at Craven Cottage stayed mixed. The result left Marco Silva’s team only one point from a European spot, but Fulham still finished 11th and outside UEFA competition.
Goals from Issa Diop and Tom Cairney secured the final-day win, though the table was already set before kick-off. Brighton, sitting eighth and taking the Conference League place, stayed just ahead. Fulham’s position in the lower half underlined how narrow margins shaped the season.

Silva spoke of pride in the performance against Newcastle, describing it as a strong way to sign off. Yet the head coach also replayed key setbacks in his mind, including the 1-0 defeat to Bournemouth in Fulham’s previous home match, which proved costly in the race for Europe.
Assessing the full campaign, Silva highlighted how small swings affected Fulham’s final standing. "At the end, you look at the season and [Fulham are] two or three points from the European places," Silva added. "It's so, so tight. Those margins play a big part always in football, in the Premier League, and they didn't come in our way."
Silva stressed that the squad must learn from those narrow defeats and drawn games. "I'm telling the players always to, yes, be frustrated, be disappointed, but make those moments make you better in the future. The Premier League is so demanding that you have to make in the future those margins come in our direction. It's as simple as that."
| Team | Final Premier League position | Gap to Fulham | European outcome |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brighton | 8th | +1 point | Qualified for Conference League |
| Fulham | 11th | — | Missed out on Europe |
Newcastle arrived at Craven Cottage also out of the European race and produced a subdued display. Fulham controlled large spells, while the visitors struggled to match their usual intensity. The flat response underlined Newcastle’s own disappointment at missing a return to continental competition.
Eddie Howe admitted Newcastle never reached their normal standards on the final day. "I don't think we were where we needed to be today, mentally, physically," Magpies boss Eddie Howe said. "We're disappointed with the performance. We know we can play a lot better than that. It's a disappointing way to end the season."
The Fulham support received thanks after the match for remaining behind the team through a season of near misses.
For Silva, the campaign closes with regret over missed points, but also with a clear platform to chase Europe again.
