Ferdinand Uncertain About De Ligt's Role In Man Utd's Defence Post-Transfer

Rio Ferdinand remains uncertain about Matthijs de Ligt ahead of his reported £42.9 million move from Bayern Munich to Manchester United. De Ligt, who made 30 appearances in all competitions for Bayern last season, is set to reunite with Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford, having previously played under him at Ajax.

United are seeking defensive reinforcements following the departures of Raphael Varane and Willy Kambwala. The team recently endured a campaign where they conceded the most goals in a Premier League season (58). This has highlighted their need for stronger defensive options.

De Ligt at Man Utd: Ferdinand's Doubts

Ferdinand, who made 312 appearances over 12 years with the Red Devils, is unsure if De Ligt's arrival will solve their issues. "I watched him at Ajax and he was brilliant in that year when Erik ten Hag was the manager, and they got to the semi-final [of the Champions League]," Ferdinand said on his YouTube channel. "He was brilliant, commanding, everything you want in a defender."

Since joining Bayern Munich in 2022, De Ligt has had mixed performances. He ranks highly among FC Bayern players in aerial duels per 90 minutes (5.0) and aerial duels won per 90 minutes (3.0). He also ranks second in clearances per 90 minutes (3.3), just behind Eric Dier (3.6).

Despite these stats, Ferdinand expressed concerns: "He's had a lot of injuries, hasn't started many games over the last two or three years and Man United are spending £45-50 million on him." Ferdinand questioned whether De Ligt could make a significant impact at Manchester United given his recent injury history.

High Expectations and Pressure

"Is he going to come into Man United and make a difference? I think it's a big ask for him and all eyes are going to be on him," Ferdinand added. The pressure on De Ligt is immense due to his previous seasons with Juventus and Bayern Munich not meeting expectations.

Ferdinand continued: "I don't think he's the answer, but it's a great opportunity for him to go in there and go, 'You know what guys? I'm going to rectify my last couple of seasons. That's not the real me, and I'm going to show you.'" This sentiment reflects both hope and scepticism regarding De Ligt's potential impact at Manchester United.

The upcoming season will be crucial for De Ligt as he aims to prove himself once again under Erik ten Hag's management at Old Trafford.
