Capello softens stance over Beckham exclusion

MADRID, Jan 26 (Reuters) Real Madrid coach Fabio Capello has softened his stance over excluding David Beckham from his plans saying that the former England captain could feature in the team if he is fully fit and shows the right attitude.

Beckham was left out of the squad for Real's match at Villarreal tomorrow, but Capello pointed out that a knee problem meant he had not been considered for selection.

''I can only select players that have trained and he hasn't trained today because of a knee problem,'' Capello told a news conference.

''I don't have any friends or enemies in the squad, I just select the best players that are available for each game. As with all the other players it will depend a lot on his physical condition.'' Capello was asked if he had made a mistake when he said that Beckham would never play for Real again following the midfielder's announcement that he would be signing for MLS side LA Galaxy at the end of the season.

''People can make mistakes,'' he replied. ''But these are decisions made by the whole coaching team and it will depend on what all three of us decide to do.

''When I see that he is in good shape and has a good attitude then he can form part of the team, but he has to show it.'' REUTERS DH RAI1955
