Barcelona 0-2 Atletico Madrid: Alvarez And Sorloth Seal Progress Toward Champions League Semi-finals

Atletico Madrid moved close to the Champions League semi-finals with a clinical 2-0 victory over Barcelona, punishing a costly red card for Pau Cubarsi at Camp Nou. Julian Alvarez struck from a free-kick before Alexander Sorloth added a second, leaving Hansi Flick’s team facing a difficult comeback in next week’s quarter-final second leg.

Barcelona had already beaten Atletico Madrid 2-1 in LaLiga on Saturday, but the fifth meeting between the sides this season followed a different script. Despite long spells of control from Barcelona, Atletico Madrid stayed compact, relied on sharp finishing, and made full use of the advantage after Cubarsi’s dismissal late in the first half.

Alvarez and Sorloth push Atleti toward semis

The key moment arrived just before half-time, when Atletico Madrid broke forward against the flow of play. Giuliano Simeone raced clear, and Cubarsi clipped the forward from behind, denying a clear chance against goalkeeper Joan Garcia. A VAR review upgraded the decision to a red card, leaving Barcelona with 10 players for the entire second half.

From the resulting free-kick, placed around 25 yards from goal, Alvarez produced the night’s decisive strike. The forward bent a precise effort over the wall and beyond Garcia’s reach, silencing Camp Nou. That goal came after Barcelona had enjoyed most of the ball and appeared to be tightening their grip on the quarter-final.

Earlier in the first half, both teams created openings. Juan Musso denied Marcus Rashford’s low shot with an important block, using strong legs to keep the effort out. At the other end, former Barcelona attacker Antoine Griezmann almost converted an Ademola Lookman cross-shot, stretching but finishing inches short of a decisive touch at the far post.

Barcelona thought they had broken through in the 18th minute when Rashford finished confidently. The celebrations ended quickly, though, as the assistant signalled offside. Replays showed Lamine Yamal had strayed beyond the defence earlier in the move, and the goal was correctly ruled out. The incident still lifted Barcelona, who increased their pressure afterwards.

Champions League quarter-final shaped by Flick’s changes and Rashford threat

Flick reacted to the red card at half-time, replacing Robert Lewandowski and Pedri in search of better balance and energy. Even with 10 players, Barcelona pushed Atletico Madrid back for long spells. Rashford remained the main outlet, constantly running at defenders and trying to find space behind the visitors’ back line.

Rashford almost levelled after rounding Musso, but a tight angle forced the shot into the side netting. Later, Rashford went close again from a free-kick taken from almost the same spot as Alvarez’s strike. This time Musso got fingertips to the powerful effort, diverting the ball onto the crossbar and away from danger.

Atletico Madrid struggled to leave their own half for much of the second period, despite the numerical advantage. Camp Nou grew louder as Barcelona chased an equaliser, committing full-backs forward and taking risks. Yet that ambition left spaces, and Atletico Madrid eventually punished the hosts on one of the few clear attacks they constructed.

Champions League quarter-final swings further with Sorloth goal and data edge

In the 70th minute, substitute Sorloth delivered a major second blow to Barcelona’s hopes. Matteo Ruggeri advanced on the left and sent a first-time cross into the area. Sorloth arrived with perfect timing and guided a controlled left-footed finish into the far corner, giving Atletico Madrid a 2-0 cushion to protect in the return leg.

Barcelona continued to press, with Joao Cancelo striking the outside of the post as more players pushed forward. The hosts finished with 18 shots to Atletico Madrid’s five and led the expected goals count by 1.16 to 0.45. Despite those numbers, the visiting forwards were far more ruthless when clear opportunities appeared.

Team Goals Shots Expected Goals (xG)
Barcelona 0 18 1.16
Atletico Madrid 2 5 0.45

Alvarez’s impact went beyond the scoreline. The forward has now scored nine Champions League goals this season, the most by any Atletico Madrid player in a single campaign, surpassing Diego Costa’s eight in 2013-14. Alvarez also became only the second visiting player to score a direct free-kick goal at Barcelona in this competition, after Antonio da Silva in December 2007.

Sorloth’s record in the Champions League has also improved sharply this season. The substitute now has six goals in 12 appearances in this campaign, after scoring only once across the first 12 Champions League matches of the forward’s career. That productivity off the bench offered Atletico Madrid another reliable source of goals behind Alvarez.

Defensively, the match carried added frustration for Barcelona after recent domestic tension. Following Saturday’s 2-1 league defeat, Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone had criticised the decision to overturn Gerard Martin’s red card for a challenge on Thiago Almada. Here, Cubarsi received no such leniency and left the pitch earlier than planned once again.

Cubarsi’s dismissal carried historical weight. The defender became the first player in Champions League history to be sent off twice as a teenager, with the previous red card coming against Benfica in the 2024-25 round of 16. Barcelona supporters still applauded the team off the pitch, but Flick’s squad now faces a demanding task to overturn the deficit away from home.
