England lost to Australia by 7 runs in final of 1987 World Cup
The last time England played in the final of a cricket World Cup at Kolkata was in 1987 when they lost to arch-rivals Australia by just seven runs. Chasing 254 set by the Australians led by Allan Border, England stopped at 246 in their allotted 50 overs.
Only 3 members of this Eng squad were born when they last played a final at Eden
The dimissal of their skipper Mike Gatting (41) when he tried a reverse sweep off Border at a crucial moment of the match was considered the turning point of the match. It was Australia's first of their five ODI World Cup titles won till today.
England, however, made the final of the 2010 T20 World Cup played at the West Indies and avenged the 1987 defeat against Australia by 7 wickets.
Can England erase the 'reverse-sweep' curse at Eden this Sunday?
