World Cup 2023: Cameron Green likely to miss remaining four ODIs in South Africa due to concussion protocol

Australia all-rounder Cameron Green will likely be out of action for the remainder of the 5-match ODI series against South Africa after being hit by a vicious short delivery on the helmet from Kagiso Rabada on Thursday.

The 24-year-old was crouching down anticipating a low delivery when the dual-paced nature of the pitch saw the Rabada delivery shoot up rapidly and hit on his helmet even before he could react.

The Australian team physio escorted him out of the ground immediately. A spokesperson of the Australian team has confirmed that Green will be undergoing an eight-day concussion protocol where he will be monitored by the team’s medical staff.

Australia will play their fifth and final match of the series on September 17. He is most certainly going to feature in the 3-match ODI series against India which starts from September 22. Australia will also play two World Cup 2023 warm-up matches before they lock horns with India in Chennai on October 8 in the main event.

Australia captain Pat Cummins is also out with a wrist injury. Other World Cup-bound players missing the South African tour because of injuries are Glenn Maxwell (ankle), Mitchell Starc (groin) and Steve Smith (wrist).

Marnus Labuschagne came in as concussion substitute for Cameron Green in the first ODI and smashed unbeaten 80 runs to lift the visitors from 113/7 to a three-wicket victory by chasing 222 in 40.2 overs.

The second ODI between South Africa and Australia will be played on Saturday, September 9 at the Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein.
