Why Was Last Year’s LSG vs RCB Match Cancelled? Revisiting the IPL 2025 Suspension

As Lucknow Super Giants prepare to face Royal Challengers Bengaluru again this season, memories of their scheduled clash in IPL 2025 - which never took place - remain fresh for many fans.

The match, slated for May 9, 2025, at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow, was cancelled after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a temporary suspension of the tournament amid national security concerns.

Escalating India-Pakistan tensions led to IPL 2025 suspension

The IPL was halted for one week following escalating tensions along the India-Pakistan border, prompting authorities to prioritize safety and security across all venues.

In an official statement at the time, the BCCI confirmed that the decision was taken after consultations with franchises, broadcasters, sponsors, and other stakeholders.

"The decision was taken by the IPL Governing Council after due consultation with all key stakeholders following the representations from most of the franchisees, who conveyed the concern and sentiments of their players," the BCCI said in its statement.

The Board emphasized that the move was made in the larger national interest, noting that the safety of players, spectators, staff, and officials remained paramount.

BCCI expressed solidarity with the nation and armed forces

The suspension was also framed as a gesture of solidarity during a sensitive period marked by heightened tensions and security operations.

"At this critical juncture, the BCCI stands firmly with the nation. We express our solidarity with the Government of India, the Armed Forces and the people of our country," the statement added.

The Board further stressed that while cricket holds immense emotional value across the country, national security considerations would always take precedence.

"While cricket remains a national passion, there is nothing greater than the Nation and its sovereignty, integrity, and security of our country."

Fans reactions to cancelled LSG vs RCB

In Lucknow, several supporters had already begun arriving at the stadium hours before the scheduled start time. Many had travelled from different parts of Uttar Pradesh in hopes of watching their favourite players live.

Despite the disappointment, most fans acknowledged the necessity of the decision given the broader circumstances.

Local vendors and ticket holders were among those affected, with some expressing concern over financial losses while still backing the move as necessary in the national interest.

The cancellation of the LSG vs RCB fixture served as a reminder of how even major sporting events can be impacted by larger national developments.

While IPL 2025 eventually resumed after the temporary suspension, the cancelled Lucknow fixture remains one of the most notable moments of that season - not for what happened on the field, but for the circumstances beyond it.

As the two teams meet again this season, the fixture carries renewed significance, with last year's cancellation standing as a reminder that sport, at times, must yield to larger priorities.
