Who Will Captain North Zone in Shubman Gill’s Absence for Duleep Trophy 2025?
New Delhi, August 7: India’s newly-appointed Test captain Shubman Gill was named skipper of the North Zone squad for the upcoming Duleep Trophy 2025.
However, his availability for the domestic red-ball competition remains uncertain due to India’s Asia Cup commitments, opening up a key question, who will lead the North Zone if Gill is unavailable?

Gill’s Heroics Against England and Domestic Return
The 25-year-old Gill, fresh off a sensational series against England where he amassed 754 runs and led India to a historic 2-2 draw, was expected to continue his leadership with the North Zone in the Duleep Trophy, starting August 28. But with the Asia Cup beginning on September 10 in the UAE, which clashes with the latter half of the Duleep Trophy, Gill’s participation appears unlikely.
Asia Cup Call-Ups May Also Affect Arshdeep and Harshit Rana
Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana, also named in the North Zone squad, are in contention for India’s Asia Cup squad, which could further weaken the side. In anticipation, the selectors have named backups: Shubman Rohilla (SSCB), Gurnoor Brar, and Anul Thakral.
Possible Captaincy Options for North Zone
Ankit Kumar (Vice-Captain)
The most likely choice to step up is Ankit Kumar from Haryana, who was named vice-captain. A seasoned performer in domestic cricket, Ankit brings stability and tactical awareness and would be a safe option to lead a young team.
Yash Dhull
Yash Dhull, the 2022 U-19 World Cup-winning captain, has already made waves in first-class cricket. With leadership experience and a composed demeanor, he could be a bold but promising pick if the selectors want to groom future leaders.
Ayush Badoni
Arshdeep Singh - India's most successful T20I pacer - will be leading the team's pace battery in the Asia Cup. Hence, the Punjab seamer might not be considered. In the absence of Gill, Delhi all-rounder Ayush Badoni - who led the state in the last Ranji Trophy season - could be given an opportunity to captain North Zone.
