West Indies Wicketkeeper Banned For 5 Years Weeks Ahead of T20 World Cup

Devon Thomas, the seasoned West Indian wicketkeeper-batter, has been issued a five-year ban from all forms of cricket, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced.

This decision comes after Thomas admitted to breaching multiple anti-corruption rules across various cricket leagues including Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB), and the Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

Devon Thomas 5 year ban

Thomas, 34, who has represented the West Indies in international cricket across all formats, last played for his country in August 2022. His career spanned 1 Test, 21 ODIs, and 12 T20Is since debuting in 2009.

According to Alex Marshall, ICC General Manager - Integrity Unit, Thomas's breaches of the codes are significant given his experience and the anti-corruption education he has received throughout his career.

Marshall stated, "Devon attended numerous anti-corruption education sessions and knew his obligations under the Anti-Corruption Codes. He failed to meet these obligations across three different franchise leagues. This ban should send a strong message that corruption within our sport will not be tolerated and will be dealt with firmly."

The sanctions against Thomas include a five-year period of ineligibility, with the last 18 months suspended. This period is backdated to May 23, 2023, when Thomas was provisionally suspended.

Thomas's violations encompass a range of offenses:

1. Under the SLC Code, he was found guilty of attempting to fix matches during the Lanka Premier League 2021 and failing to report corrupt approaches.

2. He obstructed an anti-corruption investigation by concealing, tampering with, or destroying relevant documentation, and failing to provide complete and accurate information during the investigation.

3. Similar breaches occurred during his participation in the Abu Dhabi T10 2021 and CPL 2021, where he again failed to report corrupt approaches.

These infractions reflect a serious disregard for the integrity protocols established by multiple cricket boards to protect the sport from corruption influences.

As the ICC and individual boards continue to enforce strict anti-corruption measures, this case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences awaiting those who jeopardise the fairness and reputation of cricket.
