Virat Kohli Becomes First Cricketer To Achieve Rare Feat After T20 World Cup Triumph

Virat Kohli on Saturday (June 29) achieved a unique feat following Team India's victory over South Africa in the T20 World Cup 2024 final at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados.

After Kohli's fifty powered India to a challenging 176/7 in their allotted 20 overs, the pace-bowling trio halted South Africa's response at 169/8 with their splendid death bowling display which saw Rohit Sharma's save the match from jaws of defeat.

With 30 need from 30 balls for South Africa to win their maiden ICC trophy, Jasprit Bumrah turned the tide with a tight overs, while Hardik Pandya delivered huge blows with the dismissal of dangerous Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller.

With that result, India put an agonising wait to an end as they won a World Cup for the first time since 2011 and the T20 World Cup for the first time since they won the inaugural edition in 2007.

As India ended an 11-year wait for an ICC trophy, Kohli, who is regarded as the Greatest of All Time (GOAT) in cricket, added the one missing piece and went on to become the first player to win the Under 19 World Cup, ODI World Cup, Champions Trophy and the T20 World Cup.

Announcing his arrival with the Under 19 World Cup win in 2008, Kohli went on to lift the ODI World Cup and Champions Trophy under the captaincy of veteran skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

Virat Kohli ICC Tournament Record

  • 2008 Under 19 World Champion
  • 2011 ODI World Champion
  • 2013 Champions Trophy Winner
  • 2024 T20 World Champion

In addition to the U19 World Cup, ODI and T20 World Cup titles, Kohli has also lifted the ICC Test mace, having guided India to the top of rankings in Test cricket during his tenure as skipper of the team.

The 35-year-old, however, will look to complete his collection of ICC titles next year with the World Test Championship, having come close in the two editions so far. In 2021, India lost to New Zealand in the WTC Final, while they also lost to Australia in 2023 edition.

Following the T20 World Cup win, Kohli as well as Rohit joined MS Dhoni in another unique list as the duo became the only Indian players to win three ICC trophy finals.

While Kohli and Dhoni have won the ODI World Cup, Champions Trophy and T20 World Cup, Rohit has won the T20 World Cup twice and the Champions Trophy once. Here is a look at their ICC record:

Dhoni, Rohit and Kohli ICC Final Wins

  • MS Dhoni - 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 ODI World Cup & 2013 Champions Trophy
  • Rohit Sharma - 2007 T20 World Cup, 2013 Champions Trophy & 2024 T20 World Cup
  • Virat Kohli - 2011 ODI World Cup, 2013 Champions Trophy & 2024 T20 World Cup
