Vaughan doubtful for first Test after damaging finger

London, May 4 (UNI) England captain Michael Vaughan is in doubt for the opening test against West Indies starting at Lord's on May 17 after he broke one of his fingers from a rising ball of Australian seamer Stuart Clarke while batting for his county side Yorkshire against Hampshire.

The English Cricket Board today said that after conducting an X-ray it was confirmed that the 32-year-old has broken his right hand's middle finger and further assessment would be carried out in the coming days.

''It is the middle finger on his right hand, but we won't know any more about what has happened until much later'' Yorkshire physio Scott McAllister told the 'BBC Sport' earlier in the day.

Vaughan, who has not played in a test for 18 months due to other injuries, is in the look out for runs after a miserable World Cup.

He made 72 in the first innings of the match before being run out.

Vaughan is also battling hard to keep his captaincy as questions were raised about his future after he had a rough time with bat in cricket's showpiece event.

But resting all speculation new England coach Peter Moores had confirmed that Vaughan would be captaining the side in the first Test against West Indies at Lord's on 17 May.
