'UAE cricket should be represented by nationals only'
Dubai, June 10 (UNI) Frustrated by sizeable number of expats representing UAE Cricket, a 17-year-old local boy is planning a major overhaul and has taken it upon himself to introduce the game to the locals here.
Alawi Shukri, an opening batsman, who has represented UAE at u-14, u-17 and u-19 levels, has started a mission of introducing locals to the game in UAE.
Having already roped in 14 national youngsters from different parts of the UAE to make a team, Shukri is bent on rewriting the history of the game here and also has the backing of his family.
Flanked by Abdul Razzaq Kazim, former chief selector, Emirates Cricket Board (ECB), Shukri Al Barik and Shahzad Altaf. Shukri organised a Press conference to announce a match between UAE nationals and the Young Talent Cricket Academy to be held at Sharjah Cricket Stadium on June 15.
''I have represented my country at all levels but I am frustrated that only expats are representing UAE in cricket at international level,'' Shukri was quoted as saying by Khaleej Times.
Advocating strongly that more nationals should take to the game, he said ''UAE is a cosmopolitan city and the rulers here have made rules to provide equal chance to every resident to excel in all spheres of life.
''But as for as sports is concerned, the UAE should be represented by the nationals only.'' ''No body can deny the importance of the sport in the history of mankind.
''Nations are known by the contribution they make to the sport and UAE is not behind anyone in this regard.
''There is no dearth of talent and I have put together a team of 14 nationals who are playing cricket,'' he added.
Citing examples of sub-continent's weakest team that has improved considerably, he said ''Bangladesh were at the same level with UAE a few years ago but they have created some of the greatest upsets in the game.
''It is high time for the authorities here to introduce the locals to the game which may help to uplift the game.'' Echoing similar views, Barik said, ''It is just a start and we hope that our dream will become a reality one day.
''The ECB should have done it long ago but it is better late than never. UAE is known for progress in every sphere of life and sports is no exception.
''It is only the result of dedication and hard work. We can do the same in cricket.
''By introducing locals to the game we can infuse new life in the game here,'' Bakri added.
Even Kazim lauded the youngster's efforts, saying ''Keeping in mind the enthusiasm and dedication of young Shukri, he is bound to succeed in his lofty plans,'' adding ''I am ready to contribute morally, financially, technically and physically.'' UNI
