T20 World Cup 2026: Rachin Ravindra’s All-Round Effort, Mitchell Santner’s Blitz Helps NZ Knock Out SL
Colombo, Feb 25: New Zealand delivered a masterclass in resilience and tactical adaptability to knock co-hosts Sri Lanka out of the T20 World Cup 2026 with a commanding 61-run victory in the Super 8 contest at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Wednesday (February 25).
In a match defined by dramatic momentum shifts, the Black Caps recovered from a catastrophic middle-order collapse to post a competitive 168 for 7, before Rachin Ravindra's spin wizardry dismantled the Sri Lankan chase, restricting them to a meager 107 for 8.

Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka won the toss and elected to bowl, a decision that initially appeared inspired as the pitch offered significant assistance to the spinners. New Zealand's openers, Finn Allen and Tim Seifert, provided a brisk start, hammering 30 runs in the first three overs.
However, the introduction of spin turned the tide sharply. Maheesh Theekshana drew first blood, removing the dangerous Allen for a 13-ball 23. This sparked a procession of wickets that left the Kiwis reeling.
Theekshana and Dunith Wellalage spun a web around the batters, with Daryl Mitchell, Mark Chapman, and Glenn Phillips falling in quick succession. When Mitchell was cleaned up by Wellalage, New Zealand had slumped to a precarious 84 for 6 in the 13th over, staring at a sub-120 total.
The rescue act was orchestrated by captain Mitchell Santner and Cole McConchie. The pair absorbed the pressure before launching a calculated counter-attack in the death overs.
Santner led from the front with an unbeaten 47 off 26 balls, punishing the pacers who missed their lengths, while McConchie provided invaluable support with a gritty 31 not out. Their unbroken partnership added 84 runs, propelling New Zealand to a fighting total of 168, a score that seemed improbable just an hour earlier.
Sri Lanka's chase began disastrously. Matt Henry produced a jaffa on the very first ball of the innings to bowl Pathum Nissanka for a golden duck, silencing the Colombo crowd. The hosts never recovered from this early blow.
The New Zealand bowlers, buoyed by their captain's finish, applied relentless pressure. While the seamers kept things tight, it was Rachin Ravindra who extinguished Sri Lanka's hopes. The all-rounder, having earlier scored 32, tore through the middle order with his left-arm spin, claiming career-best figures of 4 for 27.
Unable to build partnerships, Sri Lanka lost wickets at regular intervals. Charith Asalanka and Kusal Mendis failed to convert their starts, and despite a defiant 26 from Dunith Wellalage, the required run rate spiraled out of control. The lower order could only delay the inevitable as the Kiwi fielders backed their bowlers with sharp catching.
The comprehensive win not only boosts New Zealand's net run rate but also secures their passage to the semi-finals, while ending co-hosts Sri Lanka's campaign on a somber note at home.
