RCB vs GT Explained: Why Washington Sundar Was Not Given Out Despite Jordan Cox's Catch in IPL 2026 Final
One of the biggest talking points of the IPL 2026 final came in the 10th over when Washington Sundar appeared to have been caught at deep fine-leg by Jordan Cox.
The on-field decision was initially sent upstairs, and after several replays, the third umpire overturned the catch and ruled Sundar not out, much to the frustration of Royal Challengers Bengaluru captain Rajat Patidar and star batter Virat Kohli.

What happened with Washington Sundar during RCB vs GT IPL 2026 Final?
Sundar pulled a short delivery towards deep fine-leg, where Cox completed a low catch near the turf. At first glance, it appeared clean and many RCB players began celebrating.
However, the third umpire examined multiple angles before making the final call.
Why was Washington Sundar given not out?
The key factor was the position of Cox's fingers underneath the ball.
According to the Laws of Cricket, a fielder must have complete control of both the ball and their own movement, and the ball must not touch the ground during the catching process.
While replays showed Cox had two fingers underneath the ball, they also suggested that the ball made contact with the ground as he attempted to complete the catch.
The crucial issue was that his fingers were beneath the ball rather than firmly beside it, meaning the ball was not fully protected from touching the surface.
As a result, the third umpire determined there was insufficient evidence to conclude that the ball had remained clear of the ground throughout the catch.
Why were RCB unhappy?
RCB felt Cox had enough fingers underneath the ball to demonstrate control and prevent the ball from touching the turf.
Patidar immediately approached the umpires for clarification, while Kohli was visibly stunned by the verdict.
However, under current playing conditions, if the replay does not clearly establish that the ball stayed off the ground, the benefit of doubt generally goes to the batter.
RCB vs GT IPL 2026 Final: The final verdict
Although Jordan Cox appeared to have his fingers under the ball, the replay suggested the ball may have brushed the ground during the completion of the catch.
Because the fingers were underneath rather than fully surrounding the ball and there was no conclusive proof that the ball remained clear of the turf, the third umpire ruled the catch not clean and allowed Washington Sundar to continue his innings.
