The defeat for Karachi Kings also came with the bad news of an injury to young pacer Hamza Mir, who fractured his finger early in the game and is out for the season. Karachi announced Akif Javed as his replacement.
The injury further adds to the side's headache as their senior bowlers Mohammad Amir and Imad Wasim were taken to the cleaners on a Karachi surface that has traditionally offered nothing to bowlers. That was further evident from overseas stars in Andrew Tye, Imran Tahir, and Ben Cutting leaking runs as well.
There was concern in the top-order of their batting as well with domestic names in Sharjeel Khan, Haider Ali, and Qasim Akram, all cutting a sorry figure in a top-order collapse. The trio's form in the build-up to the tournament also made their performance very apparent. The only quality that appears in the batting line-up is Matthew Wade, who scored 20-odd runs but lacked support.
Runs, however, did come from Kings' bats as skipper Imad Wasim made up for his bad bowling spell with 80 not out innings and almost took Kings' home from a precarious situation. He was backed by Shoaib Malik, who scored 52 on return to his old franchise.
Islamabad United injury updates, key players
Islamabad will play their first game without swashbuckling batters Alex Hales and Rahmanullah Gurbaz. They have roped in bowlers Tymal Mills and Gus Atkinsons as their replacements.
Paul Stirling is all certain to open the innings with Rassie Van der Dussen in all likely to open the innings with former scoring runs in the inaugural SA20 for MI Cape Town.
Tom Curran is expected to fit in as an all-rounder as he was a vital member of Desert Vipers with a consistent show with the bat and ball; could be a worthy replacement for Liam Dawson
Wicket-keeper Azam Khan will be expected to take a bigger role for Karachi Kings as he scored a century in Bangladesh Premier League for Khulna Tigers but his consistency remains questionable. Young batter Hassan Nawaz put up an impressive dispay in the domestic T20 Cup for Northern and is a proposition Islamabad fans are looking into as captain Shadab Khan, who bats at No.4, has struggled to be among runs off late.
Asif Ali's and Mohammad Nawaz's recent forms are questionable but are unlikely to be dropped because of the experience they bring to the team.
All-rounder Zafar Gohar also had a strong outing in the domestic T20 with Central Punjab, where he consistently performed with the bat and ball but with the likes of Faheem Ashraf and Shadab Khan in the team, Gohar may have to wait.
Among bowlers, Hasan Ali remains the senior pacer with Mohammad Wasim shouldering more responsibility as he has been among wickets while Faheem Ashraf has also been in form in BBL. Rumman Raees brings wicket-taking form from Kashmir Premier League but it remains to be seen if he finds place in the playing 11. Shadab Khan will lead the spin department
