Jonathan Batty Reflects on Delhi Capitals' Heartbreaking WPL 2025 Final Defeat to Mumbai Indians

WPL 2025: The Delhi Capitals endured heartbreak yet again in the Women's Premier League (WPL) as they suffered an agonizing eight-run defeat against Mumbai Indians in the 2025 Final at Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai, on Saturday.

Despite their strong run in the tournament, Delhi fell short in their third consecutive WPL final, as the hosts successfully defended a modest target of 150.

Marizanne Kapp, Jess Jonassen, and N Charani played crucial roles with the ball, each claiming two wickets to restrict Mumbai Indians to 149/7 in their 20 overs. However, Delhi's chase never quite took off as Mumbai's disciplined bowling attack applied constant pressure, limiting them to 141/9 at the end of their innings.

Reflecting on the loss, Delhi Capitals' head coach Jonathan Batty admitted the team was gutted. "We've had three great seasons finishing at the top of the table. We've played some exceptional cricket, but everyone is hurt right now. 99% of the time, you back yourself to chase 150 on that wicket, but full credit to Mumbai for the way they bowled and executed their plans."

Mumbai had their own struggles at the start of the innings, losing early wickets before skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and Nat Sciver-Brunt steadied the ship with a crucial 89-run partnership. Kaur's 66 off 44 balls proved to be the match-defining innings, while Sciver-Brunt chipped in with a steady 30 off 28.

Batty acknowledged their brilliance, stating, "Nat Sciver-Brunt had an outstanding tournament, scoring over 500 runs, and Harmanpreet was fantastic. Her innings made the difference between the two teams today."

Despite falling short, Delhi Capitals' captain Meg Lanning once again showcased her leadership throughout the tournament. Batty lauded her impact, saying, "She's been brilliant. Meg has thrived in the captaincy role, leading this wonderful group of players so well for three years. She's played exceptionally at times throughout the tournament."

With yet another final loss, Delhi will be determined to break their title jinx in the next edition of the WPL.
