IPL 2026: Sai Sudharsan Shatters Chris Gayle's 13-Year-Old IPL Record During GT vs PBKS Clash

The rise of Gujarat Titans' (GT) elegant opening batter, Sai Sudharsan, continues to be the highlight of the IPL 2026 season. The 24-year-old left-hander is officially rewriting the tournament's record books, taking down milestones set by T20 legends.

During a thrilling Sunday evening encounter against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Sudharsan achieved a massive feat by surpassing the "Universe Boss" himself, Chris Gayle.

IPL 2026 Sai Sudharsan Shatters Chris Gayle s 13-Year-Old IPL Record During GT vs PBKS Clash

The New Milestone: Most Runs After 50 IPL Innings

Chasing a target of 164 set by the Punjab Kings, the Gujarat Titans needed a steady hand. Sai Sudharsan delivered precisely that, anchoring the chase with a composed and stroke-filled 57 off 41 balls. While his innings laid the foundation for GT's victory, it also etched his name into the history books.

With this knock, Sudharsan broke the long-standing record for the most runs scored by a batter in their first 50 IPL innings. Sai Sudharsan now boasts an incredible tally of 2,178 runs in his first 50 IPL innings.

The previous record was previously held by West Indies powerhouse Chris Gayle, who amassed 2,061 runs in his first 50 outings. Gayle's remarkable record had stood completely unchallenged for 13 years before Sudharsan finally eclipsed it. To put that into perspective, Sudharsan was just 11 years old when Gayle initially set the benchmark.
Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh currently sits third on this elite list, having scored 1,933 runs in his first 50 innings.

Incredibly, this is not the first time Sudharsan has dethroned Chris Gayle this season. The young Indian star has made a habit of breaking the Jamaican legend's speed records.

Just a few days prior, during a clash against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) where he smashed a scintillating 100 off 58 balls, Sudharsan broke another massive milestone. He became the fastest batter in IPL history to reach the 2,000-run mark. Sudharsan achieved the feat in just 47 innings, officially edging out Gayle, who had reached 2,000 runs in 48 innings.

While Sudharsan's 57-run knock was the statistical highlight of the evening, the match itself was a nail-biter. GT found themselves under pressure late in the chase.

Following Sudharsan's dismissal, the required run rate crept up, leaving Gujarat needing 11 runs off the final over bowled by Marcus Stoinis. Washington Sundar stepped up as the hero in the death overs, playing a sensational unbeaten cameo of 40 off just 23 balls. Sundar sealed the dramatic victory with a premeditated scoop for a six with just one ball to spare, capping off a historic night for the Gujarat Titans.
