IPL 2026: Meet Danish Malewar and Krish Bhagat, Mumbai Indians' Fresh Faces Making Debut vs Gujarat

IPL 2026: Mumbai Indians gave Indian Premier League 2026 debuts to youngsters Danish Malewar and Krish Bhagat against Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium on 20 April. The team remained without an opener and former captain Rohit Sharma, who is out with a hamstring injury, and also left out overseas batter Ryan Rickelton after a poor run.

Both 21-year-olds entered a Mumbai Indians side searching for fresh options at the top and in the middle overs. Danish opened with Quinton de Kock but fell early, while Krish joined as a pace-bowling all-rounder. The match against the Gujarat Titans became a major step in their professional journeys.

Mumbai Indians' debut spotlight on Danish Malewar

Danish, a right-handed batter from Vidarbha, built a strong reputation in domestic red-ball cricket before joining the Mumbai Indians. The franchise picked Danish at the 2026 auction for Rs 30 lakh, which was the base price. For Vidarbha, Danish usually batted at No. 4, anchoring the middle order across formats.

Coaches first noticed Danish at the City Gymkhana Academy, where Swaroopraj Shrivastava and Nitin Gawande guided early development. They were impressed by Danish's discipline and focus during training. Danish has played for Vidarbha from the Under-14 level, having joined the age-group set-up at just 12, and steadily progressed through the ranks.

The Ranji Trophy 2024–25 season highlighted Danish's progress. Danish scored 783 runs in nine matches at an average of 52, helping Vidarbha secure the title. The batter struck two centuries and six fifties, ending as the team's third-highest scorer. Danish admires Sachin Tendulkar and KL Rahul but wants to shape a personal batting style.

Danish aims to command every stroke, from drives to flicks and sweeps, rather than copy any single player. On debut for Mumbai Indians, Danish walked out with Quinton de Kock but managed only two runs from four deliveries. Kagiso Rabada trapped Danish leg-before with an inswinger, preventing a longer first outing.

IPL 2026: Mumbai Indians role for Krish Bhagat

Krish Bhagat entered the Mumbai Indians squad earlier in the season as a replacement for Atharva Ankolekar. Krish, a right-handed bowling all-rounder from Punjab, offers right-arm pace and late-order batting. Krish had already featured for the Reliance side in the DY Patil T20 Cup 2026 and attended Mumbai Indians trials for two years.

Before receiving a full contract, Krish worked as a support bowler during Mumbai Indians' pre-season. Captain Hardik Pandya explained that quick rise at the toss, saying, "Krish, who was part of the support bowlers, really impressed us. He got into the team three days back, and such is life that he's playing today."

Mumbai Indians outlined Krish's path in a statement, saying, "Krish has consistently impressed the coaching staff with his dedication, work ethic, and the quality he brings to every session and practice game for Mumbai Indians. His commitment and development over the years, both in domestic cricket and at Mumbai Indians' practice sessions this season, have earned him this well-deserved opportunity to transition into the main squad."

The franchise is expected to use Krish in the middle overs, particularly when the Mumbai Indians' fast bowlers struggle for breakthroughs. Danish and Krish's promotions show the team turning towards domestic talent during the Indian Premier League 2026 campaign, as injuries and form force tactical changes in the line-up against opponents like the Gujarat Titans.
