IPL 2026: LSG Left Waiting on Wanindu Hasaranga As Replacement Talk Grows; Pathirana Slowly Shows Signs Of Recovery
Lucknow Super Giants are still in the dark over Hasaranga's arrival, with the Sri Lankan all-rounder yet to join the squad or provide any concrete timeline. Bought at his base price of INR 2 crore, his prolonged absence has raised doubts within the franchise, and there is a growing possibility that they may consider alternative options.
According to a report by Cricbuzz, it is understood that the 28-year-old has not yet cleared the mandatory fitness test set by Sri Lanka Cricket, which is required before issuing No Objection Certificates (NOCs) for IPL participation. Recent updates indicate that Hasaranga did take part in a batting session at the R Premadasa Stadium, but notably did not bowl.
Hasaranga has been sidelined for nearly two months due to a left hamstring tear, with his last appearance coming in Sri Lanka's T20 World Cup opener against Ireland on February 8.

Adding to the uncertainty is his inconsistent IPL track record, along with broader concerns among franchises about overseas players who fail to report after being picked at their base price. Following a complaint from Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2024, the IPL introduced stricter rules, including potential sanctions for such withdrawals.
"We don't have any concrete update on Wanindu Hasaranga," a source close to the player was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.
A similar response came from an LSG source, who said the franchise has no clear information, and it would not be a surprise if they initiate a move to seek a replacement.
LSG Can Replace Hasaranga With Which Players?
Potential replacements being considered include:
- Mujeeb Ur Rahman
- Mohammad Nabi
- Liam Dawson
- Rehan Ahmed
All these players are part of the RAPP list and will be available for mid-season signings.
Positive Signs Around Pathirana's Return
Meanwhile, there is encouraging news for the Kolkata Knight Riders regarding Matheesha Pathirana. The Sri Lankan pacer, who was signed for INR 18 crore, is reportedly making steady progress in his recovery.
The Sri Lankan pace bowler has resumed bowling in the nets and was recently spotted training at the R Premadasa Stadium. While he is not yet operating at full intensity, the development has boosted optimism within the KKR camp about his availability later in the season.
