IPL 2026: Can KKR Afford Cameron Green? Sunil Gavaskar gives Blunt Verdict on Rs 25.2 Crore Star

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) find themselves at a tactical dilemma following a heavy 65-run defeat at the hands of Sunrisers Hyderabad.

While SRH celebrated their first win of the IPL season, the post-match chatter has shifted heavily toward the balance of the KKR XI, specifically the role of Cameron Green.

IPL 2026 Can KKR Afford Cameron Green Sunil Gavaskar gives Blunt Verdict on Rs 25 2 Crore Star

Green was brought into the side to provide that "X-factor", but as the tournament progresses, his lack of impact with both bat and ball is a concern among the game's greatest tactical minds.

Gavaskar's Verdict: Bowling is the Key

The legendary Sunil Gavaskar didn't hold back when assessing KKR's current predicament. For Gavaskar, an all-rounder who doesn't bowl effectively puts an immense strain on the rest of the lineup, especially when the middle order is already wobbling.

"KKR will need to think about their combination if Cameron Green is not going to bowl. If he isn't contributing with the ball, then they might have to consider bringing in another specialist batter. We know he has scored a hundred in the IPL and that he can bat well, but his form hasn't been great recently," Gavaskar said on Star Sports.

Green recently showed his class in Australian red-ball cricket, but the transition to the environment of IPL hasn't been as smooth.

Gavaskar pointed out that KKR's issues might be deeper than just one player, noting that the "finisher" roles are looking increasingly vulnerable.

"Yes, he scored a hundred in a red-ball game in Australia not long ago, but this is where the team needs to look closely at the numbers. Green at No. 4 is fine, but the bigger concern seems to be the No. 5 and No. 6 positions, where they appear to be struggling a bit," the India legend added.

As KKR prepare for their next outing, the management will have to decide: do they keep the faith in Green's potential, or is it time to bring in a specialist domestic batter to solidify the shaky middle order?
