IPL 2025: Why MS Dhoni Handed Over CSK Captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad? Thala Explains

In a move that sent shockwaves across the cricketing world, MS Dhoni stepped down as captain of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on the eve of the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) season.

The announcement that Ruturaj Gaikwad would be leading the side was as unexpected as it was monumental, given Dhoni's legendary stature and leadership legacy.

IPL 2025

Gaikwad, already a prominent figure at CSK and an established star in domestic cricket, took over the reins just hours before the season opener against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

While fans were taken aback by the timing of the decision, Dhoni's reasoning behind the move showcased his characteristic foresight and commitment to the franchise's future.

Calm and Composed Leadership

Dhoni highlighted Gaikwad's calm demeanor and composed approach as key factors in his decision. Speaking in an interview with JioHotstar, the former captain emphasized Gaikwad's steady temperament and leadership qualities. Dhoni's belief in the young batter's capability to handle pressure situations was evident.

"Ruturaj has been part of us for quite some time. His temperament is very good; he's very calm, very composed. So those were the reasons we considered him for leadership," Dhoni remarked.

Empowering Gaikwad's Decision-Making

Contrary to popular belief, Dhoni assured that Gaikwad was given full autonomy as a captain, making nearly all the key decisions on the field. While Dhoni's presence in the team undoubtedly served as a guiding force, he maintained a conscious effort to stay in the background and allow Gaikwad to lead.

"During the season, a lot of people speculated that I was making the decisions in the background. But the fact is, he was making 99 per cent of the decisions. The most important calls -- bowling changes, field placements -- were all his. I was just helping him out," Dhoni revealed.

Under Gaikwad's captaincy, CSK narrowly missed out on a playoff spot in IPL 2024, finishing fifth. However, Dhoni's confidence in Gaikwad's leadership ability remained unwavering.

Staying Relevant in the Modern Game

At 43 years old, Dhoni continues to defy age and expectations. While his leadership responsibilities have diminished, his on-field contributions as a batter remain significant. Following a dip in form between 2020 and 2022, where his strike rate lingered below 125, Dhoni made a stunning resurgence in the past two seasons. In IPL 2024, he struck at an explosive 220.55, dismantling bowlers with characteristic flair.

Acknowledging the evolving landscape of T20 cricket, Dhoni spoke about the importance of adapting to remain competitive. He praised the modern-day batters' willingness to innovate, embracing unconventional shots like reverse scoops and sweeps against pacers. To stay relevant, he too has embraced change.

"I have to adapt as well," Dhoni stated. "This is what is required of me for where I am batting. You have to try and stay relevant."
