IPL 2025: Cameron Green was 'certain' in RCB Retention List - Why was he Left Out?

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have kept three players in their retention list ahead of IPL 2025 auction.

Virat Kohli, Rajat Patidar, and Yash Dayal were the chosen ones to stay on the team, leaving out big names like Glenn Maxwell, Will Jacks, Mohammed Siraj, and even their captain Faf du Plessis.

Cameron Green

Cameron Green, the Australian all-rounder who had a mixed performance in the IPL 2024 season with RCB, was also among those not retained. Despite scoring 255 runs with a strike rate of 143.25 and taking 10 wickets, his season was marred by inconsistency.

However, RCB's Director of Cricket, Mo Bobat, disclosed that Green would have been retained if not for an unfortunate circumstance. It was confirmed that Green was certain to continue with RCB but was left out by the franchise.

"There was one other player we certainly would have retained. That's Cameron Green, but he's unfortunately out of the IPL due to injury," Bobat revealed after the retention list was released.

Why was Cameron Green Left Out of RCB Retention List for IPL 2025?

The reason behind Green's exclusion from the retained list is a lower back injury he sustained during the ODI series between England and Australia.

Following surgery two weeks ago, the 25-year-old is expected to be sidelined for six months. This timeline would not only make him unavailable for the majority of the IPL 2025 season but also for the ICC Champions Trophy. Given these circumstances, RCB opted against retaining him, preferring instead to explore their options in the IPL 2025 mega auction.

RCB's retention strategy for the IPL 2025 season is quite clear from their selection. By securing Virat Kohli for Rs 21 crore, Rajat Patidar for Rs 11 crore, and Yash Dayal for Rs 5 crore. In the auction, the Bengaluru-based franchise will have Rs 83 crore in their kitty.
