IPL 2025: BCCI changes further rules, including concussion substitute, playing 11 announcement time, retired out among others

IPL 2025: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced several key rule changes for IPL 2025, as reported by Cricbuzz on March 23 (Sunday).

The updated regulations include concussion substitutes, adjustments to retired-out scenarios, and new guidelines for team sheet announcements. Additionally, the fourth umpire's role has been expanded significantly.

Concussion Substitutes

A like-for-like replacement can be chosen from the nominated substitutes in case of a concussion. If a wicketkeeper sustains a concussion, the replacement can be selected from the available squad. If an overseas player suffers a concussion and the team has already used its four overseas slots, the replacement must be an Indian player from the substitutes.

Retired Out and DLS Adjustments

For matches impacted by rain or interruptions, a retired batter will now count as a wicket lost in the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) calculations. This ensures greater fairness in target adjustments for the chasing team.

Team Sheet Announcement Changes

Team sheets will now be exchanged after the toss. Captains will carry separate sheets for their batting and bowling sides. Once the toss result is determined, the captains will hand over their respective sheets to the match referee, while team managers exchange them with each other and provide copies to the Assistant Venue Manager.

Expanded Role of the Fourth Umpire

The fourth umpire will now have increased responsibilities, including:

• Random bat size checks on both match days and practice sessions.
• Monitoring bowlers leaving the field after finishing their quota of overs.
• Overseeing players who frequently leave the field for rest.
• Ensuring that only authorized personnel access the pitch area before and during the game.
• Managing the selection and supervision of match balls.

The BCCI has also emphasized that players should not approach the fourth umpire for grievances regarding on-field decisions.
