IPL 2024: Suryakumar Yadav Leaves Fans Confused With 'Heartbreaking' Post, Mumbai Indians Sweat Over His Fitness

Mumbai Indians (MI) fans were dealt a potential blow on Tuesday (March 19) as star batter Suryakumar Yadav posted a cryptic emoji on his Instagram story, hinting at his possible absence from the team's first few matches in the upcoming IPL 2024 season.

This comes just a day after Mumbai Indians' head coach Mark Boucher expressed his uncertainty regarding Yadav's availability due to a lack of official updates from the BCCI. As per reports, the batter hasn't received the BCCI clearance yet.

Suryakumar Yadav's Surgery and Recovery

SKY, currently ranked the world's No. 1 T20 batsman, is recovering from sports hernia surgery. While earlier reports suggested he might miss the initial IPL matches, his rehabilitation program is reportedly on track for the T20 World Cup later this year.

During a recent press conference, Boucher acknowledged the team's wait for official updates on Yadav's fitness clearance from the BCCI. He emphasised the importance of player fitness but also stressed the team's ability to adapt to unforeseen circumstances.

"We are awaiting official updates on Suryakumar Yadav's status from the BCCI... "Player fitness is a priority, and we have a world-class medical team to address any concerns. We may have to adapt due to unforeseen injuries, but that's the nature of professional sports," Boucher said.

IPL 2024: MI Opts for Full-Strength Squad

Despite the T20 World Cup looming later in the year, Boucher clarified that Mumbai Indians will not implement a policy of resting players during the IPL season.

"As the Head Coach," Boucher said, "I naturally aim to have all our best players on the field for every match." However, he acknowledged that the team might need to rely on its medical team's guidance if players experience niggles throughout the tournament.

Suryakumar Yadav's Confusing Emoji and Unconfirmed Status

Yadav's "heartbreak" emoji on social media has fueled speculation that he might miss the initial MI matches. The situation is further complicated by the lack of confirmation from the BCCI or the National Cricket Academy (NCA) regarding his fitness status.

Yadav underwent surgery on his groin in January after injuring his ankle in the South Africa series. Although he clarified the nature of the surgery earlier this month, his participation in the first two IPL games remains unclear.

As per a Cricbuzz report, the 33-year-old didn't get the NCA clearance and his next fitness assessment will be held on March 21. This means the top-order batter will miss the first couple of IPL 2024 games in the MI jersey.

BCCI Source Hints At Suryakumar Yadav's Delayed Return

According to a PTI report, a BCCI source confirmed that while Yadav's recovery is progressing well and he will participate in the IPL, the NCA hasn't yet cleared him for the first two matches against Gujarat Titans and Sunrisers Hyderabad.

"Surya's rehabilitation is on track and he will certainly 'return to play' in the IPL itself. However, it is still not clear whether the NCA's Sports Science and Medical Team will give clearance to play in the first two away games against Gujarat Titans and Sunrisers Hyderabad (March 27)," a BCCI source was quoted by PTI as saying.

With the IPL opener against Gujarat Titans just days away, MI and its fans anxiously await a definitive update on Suryakumar Yadav's fitness.
