India vs Australia: Mohammed Siraj and Travis Head Penalized by ICC for Heated Exchange in Adelaide Test

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has penalized Indian pacer Mohammed Siraj and Australian batter Travis Head following their heated exchange during the second Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Adelaide. Australia clinched a dominant 10-wicket victory in the day-night match to level the five-match series 1-1.

Siraj faced a fine of 20% of his match fee after being found guilty of breaching Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct. This regulation pertains to "using language, actions, or gestures which disparage or could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon dismissal."

Travis Head was also sanctioned for breaching Article 2.13 of the same code, which addresses "the abuse of a player, player support personnel, umpire, or match referee during an international match." Both players received one demerit point on their disciplinary records, marking their first offense in the past 24 months.

The ICC confirmed that both players admitted to their offenses and accepted the sanctions proposed by Match Referee Ranjan Madugalle. The incident unfolded on Day 2 of the match when Siraj dismissed Head for a brilliant 140 off 141 deliveries.

After being struck for a six on the previous delivery, Siraj responded with a stunning yorker to bowl out the Australian batter. However, the dismissal was followed by an aggressive send-off from Siraj, which included gestures towards the dressing room. Head responded with verbal remarks, escalating the situation.

In the post-play press conference, Head claimed he merely said, "Well bowled, mate," but Siraj refuted this, accusing Head of abuse. "I only celebrated, and he abused me. You saw that on TV too," Siraj told Star Sports.

"What he said in the press conference wasn't right. It's a lie that he only said 'well bowled' to me." Despite the fiery confrontation, the two players appeared to reconcile during India's second innings on Day 3, sharing a brief exchange of friendly words on the field.

While the ICC's sanctions were a stern reminder to maintain decorum, the penalties ensured both teams could move forward without losing key players. The series remains tightly poised, with the next Test set to resume the fierce rivalry.
