IND vs NZ: Mohammed Shami strikes in his first over of World Cup 2023 to go past Anil Kumble in ultra-elusive list
IND vs NZ: Mohammed Shami arrived in the World Cup 2023 in style by striking in his very first over to remove Will Young and go past legendary Anil Kumble in an ultra-elusive list.
Shami, who did not feature in the first four matches for India, went past Anil Kumble to become the third-highest wicket-taker for India in the ODI World Cups. The pacer has now 32 wickets and is only behind Javagal Srinath and Zaheer Khan.

Most Wickets for India in ODI World Cups
- Javagal Srinath - 44
- Zaheer Khan - 44
- Mohammed Shami - 32
- Anil Kumble - 31
Shami warmed the bench in the first four matches as the management played Ravichandran Ashwin in the first match against Australia before Shardul Thakur was given a go to accompany Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Hardik Pandya in the pace department.
Pandya twisted his ankle while bowling against Bangladesh in the last match. Suryakumar Yadav walked in the match against New Zealand as a specialist batter and Shardul was left out to include Shami and bolster India's pace attack in Dharamsala which is known to offer swing.
India won the toss against New Zealand and elected to field first. Mohammed Siraj struck in the fourth over to dismiss Devon Conway for a 9-ball duck. Shami could have later grabbed his second wicket as well but Ravindra Jadeja ended up dropping a sitter to give his namesake Rachin Ravindra a reprieve in the 11th over.
India and New Zealand are the only two unbeaten teams in the World Cup 2023. India have not defeated New Zealand in an ICC event since 2003.
