IND vs AUS: Scott Boland and Gulidjan Connection: How did the Australia bowler discover his Aboriginal Ancestry in 2017?

Scott Boland has made a return to Australia's Test lineup after more than one and a half years as he plays in the 2nd Test against India at Adelaide.

The Australian pacer is playing the 12th Test of his career, and represents the aboriginal community of the Oceanian country. Boland picked up two wickets in the 1st innings, sending back Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma to the hut.

Indigenous Australians have historically been underrepresented in cricket. Since Jason Gillespie, a descendant of the Kamilaroi people, broke through in the late 1990s, only a few Indigenous players have followed in his footsteps. Boland became only the 4th Indigenous player to represent Australia at international level when he made his debut in 2021.

How did Scott Boland discover his Indigenous Identity?

Scott Boland wasn't always fully aware of his Aboriginal roots. Growing up in the suburbs of Victoria, cricket was his primary focus, and his cultural identity wasn't a prominent part of his life until adulthood. It was through his grandfather and family research that Boland learned about his Gulidjan ancestry, a discovery that deepened his connection to his heritage and inspired him to be a role model for Indigenous youth.

It was discovered in 2017 that Scott's maternal grandfather John Edward was actually adopted and he originally belonged to the Gulidjan tribe, which is from the Lake Colac area in Victoria region of Australia. Hence the Australia pacer, at the age of 28 years found out of his roots.

"I am very proud to represent my people and to show what can be achieved with dedication and hard work," Boland said in an interview. His pride in his Aboriginal heritage is evident, and he views his platform as an opportunity to inspire the next generation of Indigenous cricketers.

The 35-year-old has already made a prominent mark as an Aboriginal player, and it is to be seen how he continues to navigate through the challenges of fitness and age as he looks to elongate his Australia career.

IND vs AUS 2nd Test

At the moment, India is batting 175 for 8 in the 2nd session of the match. Mitchell Starc has picked up 5 wickets as the visitors are in a spot of bother at the Adelaide Oval.
