IND vs AUS: Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Starc out of first ODI, Australia reveal their death over specialist

Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Starc have been ruled out of the first ODI of the three-match series between India and Australia at the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali on Friday, September 22.

Captain Pat Cummins, who has recovered fully from the wrist fracture which he suffered during the last Test match in Ashes 2023, confirmed the developments on the eve of the match. Steve Smith has also recovered from his wrist injury and will make his comeback alongside Cummins.

"I am feeling pretty good, my wrist is all healed now. I am hoping to play all three games. Starc won't be playing tomorrow, hope he will be well bowled later in the series, same with Maxwell. We are trying to have a balance between getting a match time to everyone in the middle as we are going to the World Cup in a couple of weeks," Cummins said.

"Steve Smith is all good, he will play tomorrow, he has a few hits and his wrist seems 100 percent fit," he added.

Maxwell suffered a minor aggravation to his left ankle during the team’s first training session in Durban ahead of the T20I series against South Africa. Left-arm pacer Starc, who played a crucial role in Australia's 2-1 ODI series victory against India in March, suffered "groin soreness" upon his return from the Ashes. He also suffered a shoulder injury on his Ashes 2023 tour.

IND vs AUS: Australia to play with 4 frontline bowlers, reveal their death over specialist

Further, Pat Cummins asserted that Australia will play the first ODI with four frontline bowlers. He also revealed that spinner Adam Zampa will be seen playing a crucial role for the team in the death overs.

"We have picked four frontline bowlers who should be ready to bowl in all phases. Especially, Zampa is effective in not only keeping the run rate down but also picking and taking a couple of wickets in the death which is really important as well. It would not be surprising if we keep 3-4 overs of him," he added

The ODI series is an opportunity for Australia to adapt to Indian conditions and work out their team combination.

Australia Squad for ODIs vs India: Pat Cummins (captain), Sean Abbott, Alex Carey (wicketkeeper), Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Josh Inglis (wicketkeeper), Spencer Johnson, Marnus Labuschagne, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Tanveer Sangha, Matt Short, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Marcus Stoinis, David Warner, Adam Zampa
