ICC World Cup 2023: Danish Kaneria takes dig at Mohammad Rizwan for dedicating win vs Sri Lanka to Gaza

Former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria took to X, formerly Twitter, to indirectly criticise current wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan for dedicating their win against Sri Lanka at the ICC World Cup 2023 to Gaza a few days ago.

The tweet comes a day after Pakistan were humiliated by India at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Before the defeat, Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka in ICC World Cup's record run chase of 345 runs with Rizwan scoring a century.

Following the win, Mohammad Rizwan posted on X, "This was for our brothers and sisters in Gaza." The tweet was indirectly criticised by Danish Kaneria on Sunday morning, who tweeted on the social media platform, "Next time dedicate your victory to humanity. The almighty never supports cruelty.".

Rizwan looked in fine form in the match against India as well in Ahmedabad before Jasprit Bumrah castled him with a slow off-cutter that claimed his off stumps while the batter was on 49. Bumrah was adjudged man of the match while Rohit Sharma scored a blistering 84 to help India chase down a total of 192 runs by the 31st over.

The match was also marred with further controversy as Pakistan team director Mickey Arthur said the match felt more like a BCCI event than an ICC event. "Look, I'd be lying if I said it did. It didn't seem like an ICC event to be brutally honest. It seemed like a bilateral series; it seemed like a BCCI event. I didn't hear Dil Dil Pakistan coming through the microphones too often tonight," said Arthur.

"But I'm not going to use that as an excuse because for us it was about living the moment, it was about the next ball and it was about how we were going to combat the Indian, the Indian players tonight," Arthur added.

The lack of green in the stands was partly down to Pakistani fans not being granted visas for the tournament.
