Australia win gold in Olympic test event in Beijing, Pak third

Beijing, Aug 14 (UNI) Australia taught a hockey lesson to China by crushing the hosts 9-0 in the final to win gold in Olympic hockey test event here.

Pakistan won the bronze with a convincing 4-1 victory against Malaysia in the four-nation Good Luck Beijing tournament.

The final was the easiest match for Australia in the whole tournament, though it took a while before the Kookaburras were able to open the floodgates.

Australia led the Chinese 2-0 in the half time through goals from Matthew Naylor and Aaron Hopkins in the 19th and 22nd minutes respectively.

After the lemon break, Australia scored six times in less than 20 minutes. Grant Schubert rounded off the tally in the last minute of the match.

In the women's section also, Australia won the gold, defeating hosts China 5-3 via penalty shoot out after both the teams remained levelled 2-2 after regulation and extra times.

Argentina took the bronze after a 2-1 victory over South Africa in the four-team field.
