Australia 289-8 v New Zealand innings

SYDNEY, Jan 14 (Reuters) New Zealand fast bowler Shane Bond took a hat-trick in the final over as Australia piled on 289 for eight in the second tri-series one-day international at Hobart today.

All-rounder Andrew Symonds top scored with 69 off 70 balls after Adam Gilchrist got the Australian innings off to a flying start with 61 off 58 deliveries.

New Zealand put the brakes on Australia's scoring when they reduced the home side to 196-5 in the 42nd over but a 90-run partnership between Symonds and Cameron White tipped the scales their way and left the Kiwis chasing a daunting total.

White smashed three sixes, including two in a row off left-arm spinner Daniel Vettori, for a quickfire 45 off 32 balls before he was caught on the boundary by Craig McMillan, giving Bond the first leg of his hat-trick.

The only other New Zealander to record a hat-trick was Danny Morrison, against India in 1994, while the only other player to take a one-day international hat-trick against Australia was Pakistan's Jalal-ud-Din in 1982.

Symonds departed on the next ball when he nicked a catch behind to wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum before Bond clean bowled Nathan Bracken with a slower ball, becoming the 20th player and only the second New Zealander to take a one-day international hat-trick.

Australia were eyeing a total in excess of 300 when Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden put on 83 for the opening wicket when New Zealand's bowlers struck back.

Hayden departed for 27 when he gloved a legside catch off paceman Mark Gillespie then Gilchrist was trapped lbw by Jeetan Patel after belting the spinner out of the ground to bring up the Australian 100 in the 17th over.

Ricky Ponting (10), Michael Clarke (33) and Mike Hussey (20) all made starts but failed to go on as Australia lost 5-113 in 27 overs before Symonds and White belted 90 runs off nine overs with some lusty hitting.
