Thomas & Uber Cup 2026: PV Sindhu’s Strong Fight Not Enough As India Suffer 0-5 Defeat Against China
India's Uber Cup campaign ended with a 0-5 defeat to China, despite several promising positions. China underlined its domination in the tournament with a record 16th progression from the group stage in the tournament's history. Amongst all the female shuttlers, veteran Indian badminton player PV Sindhu came closest to a win.
One of the major factors that played against the Indian badminton team was the fact that the team failed to convert its chances. The contest effectively slipped away after the opening singles, where Sindhu's narrow loss shifted the momentum. China then wrapped up the next two rubbers to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead. India battled on in the remaining matches, but the Chinese squad completed a clean sweep without major late scares.

Thomas & Uber Cup 2026: Sindhu's Setback Against World No. 2
Sindhu faced world No. 2 Wang Zhiyi and briefly swung momentum India's way. After dropping the first game 16-21, Sindhu recovered to claim the second 21-19. In the decider, Sindhu surged ahead 18-12, yet lost six straight points and finally went down 19-21, handing China the early advantage.
The doubles line-up could not reverse the slide against China's depth. Priya Konjengbam and Shruti Mishra struggled to handle the top-ranked Chinese pair and lost in straight games. Later, Treesa Jolly and Kavipriya Selvam pushed their match into a third game, but China closed out that doubles rubber as well.
Between those two doubles contests, Isharani Baruah had a real opening to revive India's Uber Cup hopes. Baruah tested Chen Yufei, yet errors at key moments, including a missed game point, proved crucial. Chen took the match in straight games, confirming China's 3-0 lead. Devika Sihag also lost in three games after a strong start.
India had arrived at this India vs China Uber Cup tie under pressure, following a defeat to Denmark. A win over Ukraine restored some confidence, but China demanded near-perfect execution. Instead, India missed big points and allowed momentum to swing away repeatedly, again showing the gap to a well-drilled Chinese badminton system.
Thomas Cup 2026: India vs China
With the Uber Cup exit confirmed, attention shifts from PV Sindhu and the women's squad to the Thomas Cup and another India vs China clash. India's men have already reached the Thomas Cup quarterfinals and now meet China next, with the women's defeat offering a clear measure of the challenge ahead.
