West Ham Edge Brentford In FA Cup Quarterfinals After Penalty Shootout Win

West Ham reached the FA Cup quarter-finals after a dramatic 5-3 penalty shoot-out victory over Brentford at London Stadium, with Dango Ouattara’s failed Panenka attempt proving decisive as Konstantinos Mavropanos struck the winning kick to secure a last-eight home tie against Leeds United.

The tie stayed level at 2-2 after 120 minutes, with Jarrod Bowen and Igor Thiago each scoring twice in normal time. Both teams continued to attack through extra-time, yet neither side managed to find a decisive third goal, sending the all-London clash to spot-kicks.

West Ham win in FA Cup shootout

Bowen and Thiago opened the shoot-out by converting their penalties, continuing their earlier scoring duel. Valentin Castellanos then drilled in Brentford’s second attempt, but Ouattara tried a Panenka with Brentford’s third, which Alphonse Areola read easily, catching the chipped effort and handing West Ham a clear advantage.

That miss shifted the pressure, and West Ham’s remaining takers kept calm. Callum Wilson and Tomas Soucek both found the net with firm efforts, before Mavropanos stepped up. The defender powered home the decisive penalty, maintaining West Ham’s perfect record in the shoot-out and sending Brentford out of the competition.

The match itself had started at a frantic pace, with chances at both ends in the first quarter-hour. West Ham struck first in the 19th minute, when Mateus Fernandes swung in a cross that Kristoffer Ajer inadvertently nudged into Bowen’s path, allowing Bowen to flick past Caoimhin Kelleher from close range.

Brentford responded nine minutes later through Thiago. A set-piece situation saw James Collins win a header inside the box, and Thiago diverted the ball into the net. The equaliser survived a VAR check for a possible handball by the Brazilian, and the goal stood to restore balance to the tie.

West Ham vs Brentford FA Cup penalty incidents

West Ham regained the lead when Bowen struck again from the penalty spot. Michael Kayode tangled with Adama Traore inside the area, and although referee Andy Madley initially rejected appeals, VAR advised a review. After checking the monitor, Madley awarded the penalty, which Bowen converted with a composed finish.

Brentford forced extra-time with a late response from 12 yards. In the 81st minute, Kayode went down after a push in the back from Crysencio Summerville. The referee pointed to the spot, and Thiago sent Areola the wrong way, levelling the match at 2-2 and extending the contest deep into the evening.

Extra-time brought further opportunities for both sides, with tired legs but little drop in intensity. West Ham created openings through wide areas, while Brentford threatened on the break. However, neither attack produced a decisive moment, leaving the outcome to be settled by penalties and setting the stage for Ouattara’s costly Panenka attempt.

West Ham vs Brentford FA Cup stats and Bowen record

Bowen’s performance again highlighted Brentford as a favoured opponent. The forward now has nine goals in all competitions against Brentford, seven for West Ham and two for Hull City, giving Bowen three more goals against the Bees than against any other club in a career comparison.

Since Brentford joined the Premier League in the 2021-22 season, no player has scored more goals in all competitions against them than Bowen’s seven, a figure matched only by Phil Foden and Mohamed Salah. Bowen has scored more than once in only two of his last 129 West Ham games, both home matches against Brentford.

Team Goals in normal time Penalties scored in shoot-out Penalties missed in shoot-out Shots Expected goals (xG)
West Ham 2 5 0 18 2.85
Brentford 2 3 1 17 3.09

Nuno Espirito Santo’s team had to withstand heavy pressure despite progressing. West Ham posted an expected goals figure of 2.85 from 18 shots, while Brentford recorded a higher xG of 3.09 from 17 attempts, underlining how finely balanced the tie was even though the hosts prevailed in the shoot-out.

Supporters celebrated reaching the FA Cup quarter-finals for the first time since the 2015-16 campaign, particularly given West Ham had lost 2-0 to Brentford in the Premier League meeting in October. This victory provided both cup progress and a measure of revenge before hosting Leeds United in the next round.

"Onto the quarters!
