Van Dijk Highlights Perceived Liverpool Mentality Lapse After FA Cup Exit
Liverpool suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat against Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals, with Virgil van Dijk accusing the team of giving up. The loss at Etihad Stadium ended Liverpool's domestic cup hopes and increased scrutiny on Arne Slot after many away supporters left before the final whistle.
The scoring began when Van Dijk tripped Nico O'Reilly in the penalty area, allowing Erling Haaland to convert from 12 yards. That incident set the tone for a difficult evening, as Liverpool struggled to respond and Manchester City controlled key moments in both halves.

Haaland's first-half penalty was followed by a second goal for Manchester City before the interval. After half-time, Antoine Semenyo struck the third for the hosts, and Haaland completed a hat-trick in the 57th minute, leaving Liverpool without any realistic chance of a comeback in the FA Cup tie.
Van Dijk's foul on O'Reilly meant the defender has now conceded four penalties in all competitions this season. No other player from Europe's top five leagues has given away more spot-kicks, adding another unwanted statistic to Liverpool's difficult campaign across domestic and European fronts.
Liverpool's defeat in Manchester continued a worrying pattern this season. Across all competitions, Liverpool have now lost 15 matches. That is their highest single-season total since 2014-15 under Brendan Rodgers, when they were beaten 18 times. The latest reverse increased concern about form during a crucial stage of the calendar.
Dominik Szoboszlai questioned Liverpool's mentality after full-time and appeared frustrated with the travelling fans. Many supporters in the away section left well before the end of the FA Cup match, which underlined the growing pressure on Slot, and reflected the disappointment with the performance at Etihad Stadium.
"I can only apologise to the fans for what we have shown, especially the second half," Van Dijk said. "Obviously, you come out with the right intentions from the dressing room, to hopefully score for 2-1 as soon as possible to change the game. The opposite happens and to come back from 3-0 is obviously very difficult herebut also you shouldn't give up and that's maybe, at a certain point, what happened. We let our fans down, we let ourselves down, and the manager. The way we played in the second half, especially, must hurt everyone. It definitely hurts me."
The defeat fed into a wider statistical picture for Liverpool this season, highlighted by Opta data. Their 15 losses underline the scale of inconsistency facing Slot's squad. Analysts also point to the number of penalties conceded and the drop in defensive stability compared with previous campaigns.
{TABLE_1}The Opta supercomputer has assessed Liverpool's remaining European chances following the FA Cup exit. Liverpool are given a 41% probability of reaching the Champions League semi-finals and a 7% chance of winning a seventh European Cup, numbers that reflect both opportunity and the difficulty of their route.
Liverpool's focus now shifts entirely to the Champions League, which is their last route to silverware this season. The first leg of their quarter-final against Paris Saint-Germain takes place on Wednesday, offering the squad a quick chance to respond after the FA Cup loss to Manchester City.
PSG and Liverpool have met six times in European competition, with three wins each. Their latest meetings came in last season's Champions League round of 16, when both clubs won 1-0 away. PSG then progressed at Anfield after a 4-1 penalty shootout success, adding edge to the upcoming quarter-final.
"It's a together thing, isn't it? Obviously, he's responsible as the manager, but we are the ones on the pitch that have to do it," Van Dijk added. "The matter of fact is now, PSG are waiting for us. I watched them on Friday a little bit. It will be so tough again. So we have to be ready mentally as soon as possible. I've been lucky enough to play for Liverpool for so many years. The main thing we always had was togetherness. Now, obviously, we are in a little bit of a transition, we have to find it. It's difficult to perform every two days if you don't have it consistently."
Van Dijk's comments underlined a sense of transition within the squad, as Liverpool try to regain the togetherness that defined earlier seasons. With fixtures arriving every few days, mental strength and consistency are seen as crucial factors before facing PSG and the remaining Champions League challenges.
After the heavy FA Cup defeat to Manchester City, Liverpool face a defining period. The loss exposed issues with mentality, discipline and defensive decision-making, yet the Champions League still offers a chance to rescue the season. How Liverpool respond against PSG will shape the final judgement on Slot's first campaign.
