West Indies Seek Redemption at Home in T20 World Cup Opener Against Papua New Guinea
More than eight years after Carlos Brathwaite's spectacular four sixes at Eden Gardens clinched their second T20 World Cup title, the West Indies cricket team is determined to redeem themselves as they embark on their campaign in the event's ninth edition.
The tournament kicks off for them with a match against Papua New Guinea in Georgetown on Sunday.
The Glory of 2016 for Windies
The West Indies' memorable victory in 2016, where Brathwaite slammed Ben Stokes for four successive sixes in the final over, secured their place in cricket history as the first team to win the T20 World Cup twice.
Their initial triumph came in 2012. The dramatic chase at Eden Gardens remains one of the most iconic moments in T20 cricket history.
The Struggles Since
However, the years following their 2016 victory have been tumultuous for the West Indies. The team struggled to find its footing, experiencing a transitional phase marked by inconsistent performances.
In 2021, they faced an early exit from the Super 12 stage with four defeats in five games. The 2022 edition in Australia brought even more disappointment as they failed to qualify for the main round after shocking losses to Scotland and Ireland.
Two Time Champions Aim for Redemption At Home
With the tournament now on home soil, the West Indies are eager to reclaim their past glory. It's been 2982 days since that unforgettable night in Kolkata, and the team is desperate to deliver a triumphant performance in front of their home fans.
The return of two-time T20 World Cup-winning skipper Darren Sammy, this time as a coach, brings a renewed sense of hope and strategy to the squad. The Rovman Powell-led side has already demonstrated its intentions with a convincing win over Australia in a warm-up match, albeit against a depleted Australian side missing several key players.
WI Bowling Attack
The West Indies' bowling attack will miss the experienced Jason Holder, who is out due to injury. However, left-arm fast bowler Obed McCoy steps in, fresh off an impressive performance on the West Indies A's tour to Nepal, where he was the leading wicket-taker.
Papua New Guinea's Challenge
Facing the West Indies is the Assadollah Vala-led Papua New Guinea (PNG) team, making their second appearance in the T20 World Cup after their debut in 2021. PNG secured their spot in this edition by winning the East Asia-Pacific regional final in July 2023.
Bowling Line-up
PNG's bowling unit features left-arm quick Sema Kamea and Kabua Vagi Morea, with Morea having achieved a hat-trick during the qualifying matches against the Philippines. The team boasts a balanced attack with both right and left-arm options.
