Commentary
Rajasthan Royals defeated Mumbai Indians by 23 runs and went on top of the team standings. Defending 193, Royals restricted the much-fancied Mumbai side for 170/8 in a collective team effort.
Mumbai Indians were off to a bad start in the big run chase as their captain Rohit Sharma (6) was dismissed in the second over while trying to hit Prasidh Krishna for a biggie but hit it straight into the hands of Riyan Parag at backward point.
Anmolpreet Singh (5) also failed to impress as he was dismissed by Navdeep Saini. But Ishan Kishan and Tilak Verma once again held the fort for the five-time champions and shared a partnership of 81 off 54 balls.
The duo batted with caution but also made most of the loose deliveries from RR bowlers. They played the spin duo of R Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal at ease and kept the scoreboard ticking with singles and doubles when they couldn't find the boundaries.
Kishan got a breather on 41 when Yashasvi Jaiswal failed to hold on to a good catch at deep midwicket off Ashwin in the 11th over. The left-handed opener slammed his second consecutive fifty, this one came off 41 deliveries. Saini took a well-judged catch in the deep to end Kishan's knock for 54 and Trent Boult provided the breakthrough RR needed.
But the man who stole the show was 19-year-old Verma went on slamming his maiden IPL fifty. The young India U19 cricketer from Hyderabad took just 28 balls to get to his milestone. The southpaw came into the middle at a critical time and ignited the tempo MI were looking for. He hit Ashwin for a brilliant reverse sweep for a six but was clean bowled on the very next ball for 61 (33 balls).
Chahal then trapped Tim David for 1 by trapping the Singapore cricketer in front. Chahal dismissed Daniel Sams for a duck on the very next ball as Buttler - who could do nothing wrong - took a brilliant catch diving backwards in the outfield. The leg-spinner was denied a hattrick as Karun Nair failed to take a sharp catch at the slip cordon and gave Murugan Ashwin a reprieve. He finished with 2/26 and Saini also picked up a couple of wickets.
MI needed 56 off 24 deliveries and all eyes were directed towards Kieron Pollard. But the big-hitting Trinidadian failed to deliver as RR bowlers held on to their nerves in the death overs and could only score 22 off 24.
Earlier in the day, England top-order batsman Jos Buttler once again lived up to his reputation as he smashed a 66-ball century and helped Royals post 193/8 after being put in to bat first. Buttler started with caution against Mumbai Indians star pacer Jasprit Bumrah but exploded against Basil Thampi by milking 26 runs from that over and didn't look back.
Royals lost Yashasvi Jaiswal for 1 when Bumrah dismissed the youngster in the third over and left-handed batter Devdutt Padikkal was dismissed by Tymal Mills for 7 inside the powerplay. But along with Buttler, captain Sanju Samson forged a partnership of 82 runs and it looked like the Men in Pink and Blue will easily breach the 200-run mark.
Royals - who were playing a batter short - relied upon Samson (30 off 21) and then Shimron Hetmyer (35 off 14) to take their side past 200 along with Buttler. After Samson's departure, Hetmyer hammered 26 off Kieron Pollard's over to play a cameo for the second time in a row. But the Mumbai Indians bowlers came back strongly and prevented their opponents from taking the psychological advantage of posting in excess of 200.
Buttler also seemed to have slowed down in the death overs with an aim to finish with a flourish, but Bumrah - who bowled the 19th over - conceded just three off it and picked up wickets of Hetmyer and Buttler to arrest the flow of runs. Tymal Mills also picked up a couple of wickets in the 20th over and RR could only post 193/8.
There are only six occasions when English cricketers have slammed a century in the IPL and Buttler has touched the three-figure mark twice. Buttler's previous IPL ton came against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the previous season when the right-handed batter smashed 124. It was the England batter's 300th T20 game and he made it special big time.
OUT! Caught. Navdeep Saini to Kieron Pollard. Full toss, outside off stump on the front foot driving, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled to deep extra cover, caught by Buttler. Pollard departs. It's a comfortable victory for RR and they move to the top of the table. Ishan and Tilak have built solid innings' in the middle overs but the other batters failed to contribute to their side. Jos Buttler has been adjudged as Player of the Match for his outstanding knock. Cheers.

Mumbai Indians will look to bounce back when they take on confident Rajasthan Royals in match 9 of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday (April 2).
In their season opener, Rohit Sharma's MI maintained an unwanted record of failing to win their season opener against Delhi Capitals, while RR inspired by their skipper Sanju Samson and the bowlers got their campaign off to a rollicking start with victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad.
While MI suffered a 4-wicket loss defending a target of 178 and currently occupy the ninth spot, RR claimed a 61-run win against SRH to boost their Net Run Rate (NRR) and take pole position.
Although it's pretty early in the season to be looking at the points table, a boost in NRR is always good and RR will hope to maintain a healthy one as the season progresses.
MI, who missed the play-offs due to a lower NRR. will know all about a high NRR as well.
