Commentary
A clinical effort from South Africa helped them beat India by 5 runs in the Super 12 stage match at Perth Stadium and ended the Rohit Sharma-led side's winning streak in the T20 World Cup.
David Miller and Aiden Markram - two of the team's seasoned campaigners - smashed brilliant half-centuries in the tricky run chase of 134 against a high-quality Indian bowling line-up.
However, courtesy to the Indian pacers - who picked up wickets early in a game that went to the last over - as they made a game out of it.
With this win, Temba Bavum's men climbed to the top of the points table in Group 2. Indians looked some 15-20 runs short after electing to bat first and the partnership of 76 runs helped SA overhaul the small target of 134 in 19.4 overs.
Miller and Markram smashed half-centuries for South Africa while Lungi Ngidi stunned the Indians with his sensational spell upfront and picked up 4 wickets to trigger a batting collapse for the Indians. Ngidi - who was picked up in the squad for this game - starred with the ball for his team and rocked India's in-form top-order.
However, Suryakumar Yadav's sensational knock of 68 off 40 balls revived India from 49/5 in 8.3 overs and helped them post 133/9.
In the run chase, India pacers Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Shami, Bhuvneshwar Kumar started on a confident note and didn't allow South African batters to breathe easily in the bowling-friendly conditions at Perth. But they failed to break the stand between Miller and Markram in the middle overs which proved costly.
India's fielding could be attributed as one of the reasons for India's defeat as Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma gave reprieves to Markram at a crucial stage and aided the opposition.
South Africa's fielding, on the other hand, was simply amazing and that made all the difference.
