Commentary
Rajasthan Royals started IPL 2022 season with a clinical 61-run win over Sunriser Hyderabad at MCA Stadium in Pune. This was RR's biggest ever win over SRH in terms of runs remaining.
Chasing a mammoth 210, SRH found themselves in a messy situation from start and never really found themselves going.
It was also the first match a team won defending a total in this season.
With plenty of runs to defend, the new pace duo of Prasidh Krishna and Trent Boult gave Sunrisers Hyderabad early blows. Krishna removed SRH captain Kane Williamson for 2 in the second over of the innings and then dismissed Rahul Tripathi for a three-ball duck in his next over.
The Karnataka - who had conceded just two runs from his first three overs - leaked 14 runs from his final over to finish his quota of four overs with 2 for 16.
Krishna's new-ball bowling partner Boult also had a fine debut for Royals and returned with figures of 1 for 23 and even bowled a maiden over.
Markram was the lone bright spot for the Orange Army in the match as the South Africa top-order batsman scored an unbeaten 57 off 41.
Aiden Markram - who was pushed down the batting order for his quality to play pace and spin with equal ease - looked comfortable against every bowler and notched up his fifty off 39 deliveries.
Yuzvendra Chahal picked up three wickets and he dismissed West Indies all-rounder Romario Shepherd with beauty to complete 250 victims in the T20 format.
The wrist-spinner made his debut for Rajasthan Royals special with his imperious effort and returned with figures of 3 for 22.
All-rounder Washington Sundar - who had a forgettable show with the ball - made up with the bat as he scored a quickfire 40 off 13. Along with Markram, he brought up a partnership of 55 off just 20 deliveries.
Earlier in the day, riding over a sensational half-century from captain Sanju Samson and a combined batting effort from the top-order batters, Rajasthan Royals posted a mammoth 209 for six after being put in to bat first.
Leading from the front, Samson smashed 27-ball 55 and scored at a strike rate of 203.70. The right-handed batsman who walked into the middle at number three smashed five towering sixes and three boundaries.
Only his teammate Shimron Hetmyer scored quicker than Samson. Hetmyer (32 off 13 deliveries) scored at 246.15 and helped the team go past 200, the first total in excess of 200 at this venue.
Jos Buttler (35 off 28) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (20 off 16) gave the Royals a fabulous start as the duo added 58 runs for the first wicket. Buttler was caught behind on Bhuvneshwar Kumar's out-swinging delivery for a duck in the first over. The England opener survived as the pacer had overstepped.
Umran Malik impressed all with his pace and dismissed set Buttler and Devdutt Padikkal (41 off 29). The young India seamer finished with 2 for 39. Bhuvneshwar, however, was the most economical bowler for SRH as he finished with 1 for 29.
The Kane Williamson-led side would look to forget the performance tonight and come back strongly in the next outing.
Riyan Parag to Aiden Markram. Carrom length ball, outside off stump on the front foot cutting, in the air under control to deep cover for 1 run. It's a comfortable victory for Rajasthan Royals and they have changed the concept of win the toss, bowl and win the game. RR has performed well in all departments tonight. SRH need to make some changes in their game plan in the upcoming games. Sanju Samson has been adjudged as Player of the Match. Cheers.

Former champions Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad will clash tonight in match 5 of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 at the MCA Stadium in Pune.
New season brings new hope and both teams will look to open their campaign with a win after a poor last season, finishing in the bottom two positions of the points table.
Royals revamped their squad during the two-day auction after smart retentions including talented skipper Sanju Samson, who has been around the scene for a while now. SRH also had a decent auction after they retained only skipper Kane Williamson as their capped player.
The Jaipur-based side are most likely to open with Jos Buttler and Devdutt Padikkal with the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Samson and power-hitters Shimron Hetmyer, Jimmy Neesham and Riyan Parag to follow in the middle-order.
Royal possess a stronger bowling unit this time around with the inclusion of top Indian spin duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal. Trent Boult will lead the pace attack along side Prasidh Krishna.
RR enough depth with the likes of Rassie van der Dussen, Karun Nair, Navdeep Saini, Daryl Mitchell, Nathan Coulter-Nile among many others to call upon if required.
Sunrisers Hyderabad, meanwhile, will bank on the experience of captain Williamson, who could open with Abhishek Sharma while hard-hitting Nicholas Pooran, Aiden Markram and Rahul Tripathi are expected to shoulder responsibility in the middle order.
If Williamson chooses to bat at No.3, then Tripathi will open the batting while Abdul Samad, who has impressed many with bat and ball, will play the role of a finisher.
The bowling attack will be led by pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar and will also feature new pace sensation Umran Malik and Marco Jansen, while Washington Sundar and one among Shreyas Gopal or J Suchith may be tried out as spinners.
The team also has T Natarajan, Kartik Tyagi, Glenn Phillips, Romario Shepherd and Fazalhaq Farooqui among others in their squad, adding depth to almost every area.
In the head-to-head stats, the two former champions have met 15 times in the IPL with Sunrisers taking a slight advantage with 8 wins against RR, who won 7 times. But, form and past record will go out of the equation as both teams feature completely different teams from previuos seasons.
So, an interesting match awaits us tonight at the MCA Stadium, where it has favoured the batters and provided assistance for spinners as the game progresses with chasing teams being the most successful in the venue.
