Commentary
The opening game of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 lived up to its hype where holders Gujarat Titans defeatedChennai Super Kings by 5 wickets.
The highly-anticipated encounter between mentor MS Dhoni and his protege Hardik Pandya entertained the crowd till the last over as it went down the wire.
The Titans eventually came out as a better team on the evening in front of a capacity Narendra Modi Stadium which was immersed in colours of yellow and blue.
GT first restricted CSK to 178-7 at the end of 20 overs after opting to bat first and later their batters went home inside 19.2 overs with five wickets in hand.
Ruturaj Gaikwad - who played a brilliant knock of 92 off just 50 deliveries - was the top-scorer in the match but his efforts went in vain as Chennai ended up losing its third consecutive match against Gujarat.
Rashid Khan was awarded the player of the match for his exploits with the ball and later a cameo with the bat in the 19th over during the run chase.
Shubman Gill slammed a wonderful half-century and laid the foundation for the Titans in the run chase.

It's clash of champions to open IPL 2023 as holders Gujarat Titans host four-time winners Chennai Super Kings tonight at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
GT led by Hardik Pandya will look to repeat last season's achievement, while MS Dhoni-led CSK will look to bounce back from a ninth-place finish in possibly their veteran skipper's final IPL season.
This will be the third meeting between the two sides in IPL with GT holding the advantage, having won both the previous encounters against CSK.
The home side GT will miss the services of one of their star players from last season in the form of David Miller, who is on international duty with South Africa. They will, however, have a boost with the likes of Rashid Khan and Alzarri Joseph being available for the campaign opener.
The visiting CSK, on the other hand, will miss the services of Sri Lanka spinner Maheesh Theekshana, who is on international duty, and injured Mukesh Choudhary. The Chennai-based side have roped in young left-arm pacer Akash Singh as Choudhary's replacement.
