CSK Star Scripts History, Breaks World Record of Fastest 50 on Test Debut

South Africa's young batting sensation Dewald Brevis announced his arrival in the longest format with a bang, smashing a world record during his Test debut against Zimbabwe on Saturday (June 28) at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo.

Known for his explosive batting in the shorter formats, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) star carried that flair into red-ball cricket by scoring the fastest half-century ever on Test debut.

Coming in to bat at No. 6, Brevis lit up the innings with a blistering knock of 51 runs off just 41 balls. His aggressive intent was evident right from the start, as he struck three boundaries and cleared the ropes thrice. He reached his maiden Test fifty in just 38 deliveries, surpassing all previous records for the fastest fifty on debut in Test history.

Brevis achieved the feat in the first innings itself, a remarkable distinction considering that only two other debutants have ever scored fifties in fewer than 38 balls-but in their second innings. Tim Southee of New Zealand had reached his fifty in just 29 balls against England in 2008, and England's Jacob Bethell did it in 37 balls against the Kiwis in 2024. However, both came in the second innings, making Brevis' milestone in the first innings a unique record.

Partnering with fellow debutant Lhuan-dre Pretorius, Brevis stitched a crucial 95-run stand for the fifth wicket. Pretorius, a 19-year-old left-handed wicketkeeper-batter, also made a sensational start to his Test career by notching up a century. He reached the three-figure mark in 112 balls, becoming the youngest South African and the fifth-youngest player overall to score a hundred on debut.

Adding to South Africa's dominance, all-rounder Corbin Bosch remained unbeaten on 100 off 124 balls, helping the Proteas close Day 1 at a commanding 418/9 under the leadership of Keshav Maharaj.

Brevis' record-breaking knock has not only etched his name in the history books but also sparked excitement about what lies ahead for South Africa's newest Test star.
